A TV point in a new build is not just a plug behind a screen.
It affects the wall finish, joinery, cable route, equipment location, remote control, ventilation, source selection, internet connection and future service access.
That is why the TV point should be agreed by the architect, electrician, interior designer and AV team before the wall is closed or the cabinetry is built.
If the decision is left too late, the room may still get a TV.
It may not get a clean, serviceable AV installation.
The TV height must be agreed early
Standard heights are useful as a starting point, but they are not a substitute for a room decision.
The correct TV height depends on the furniture, viewing position, room use, fireplace, cabinetry, screen size, interior design and whether the TV is being viewed from a bed, sofa, bar counter or outdoor seating area.
The AV team needs the final height before conduit and boxes are placed.
If the height changes after plastering, the installation becomes a compromise. The TV may cover the wrong area. The conduit may not line up. The bracket may clash with the cable exit. The decorator may be unhappy with visible plates or access points.
This is why TV height and cabinet space should be decided together.
The wall box and cover plate need coordination
For many TV points, a proper 4x4 box and suitable blank cover gives a cleaner and more serviceable result than a random hole in the wall.
But the cover style must match the rest of the electrical finish.
That means the person supplying the light switches and covers should be involved. If the interior designer has specified a particular range of plates, the TV point should not become the one ugly exception on the wall.
This is a small detail, but small details are where premium rooms either feel resolved or patched together.
The conduit size must match the real cable
TV conduit is one of the places where undersizing causes immediate pain.
It is not enough to ask whether a cable fits through a pipe on paper. Connectors, bend radius, replacement access and future changes all matter.
For new builds, I prefer to plan generous, direct routes for TV points, especially where HDMI, fibre HDMI, network, control or future source changes may be involved.
Where the TV point is returning to the head-end, the route should be as direct as possible and should avoid unnecessary loops. If the run becomes too long or awkward, the design may need to change before the conduit is installed.

Decide where the sources live
The next question is where the equipment will be.
Will the decoder, Apple TV, media player or matrix equipment sit behind the screen, inside nearby cabinetry, or in the central head-end?
Each choice changes the design.
Local equipment may need power, ventilation, shelf space and remote-control planning. Centralised equipment may need HDMI extension, network control, IR, app control or automation integration. A simple wired TV may only need a clean route from the table, cabinet or head-end.
The mistake is pretending all TV points are the same.
A main lounge, guest bedroom, bar area, cinema, office display and outdoor TV may each need a different approach.
Joinery can make or break the installation
Joinery is often designed beautifully and then asked to hide equipment it was never planned to hold.
That creates heat, access and cable problems.
Before cabinetry is manufactured, the AV team should know:
- where the TV bracket will mount;
- where cables enter and exit;
- where equipment will sit;
- how equipment will breathe;
- how a technician will reach it;
- whether a soundbar, centre speaker or local amplifier is required;
- whether future replacement is possible without damaging the finish.
If the joinery is already built, the installer is forced to work around it. If the AV requirements are designed into the joinery, the technology disappears properly.

Remote control should be decided before the screen is mounted
Clients often think the TV is finished once it is on the wall.
But the daily experience depends on control.
Will the room use the TV remote? A DStv remote? A Crestron remote or touchscreen? Mobile app control? Voice? A keypad scene?
There is no single correct answer for every room.
Some guest bedrooms are better with a familiar remote. A main living area may be better integrated into the wider smart home. A private cinema needs a different control philosophy again.
The control method should be decided before equipment is hidden, because it affects IR placement, network control, source location and handover.
A good TV point protects the finished room
The purpose of proper TV point planning is not to complicate a simple screen.
It is to protect the finished room.
When the architect, electrician, interior designer and AV team agree early, the result is cleaner:
- the screen lands at the right height;
- the wall plates match;
- the conduit is usable;
- the cable run is serviceable;
- the equipment has a planned home;
- the remote/control method makes sense;
- the finished joinery does not need to be cut open later.
