A large multi-floor structured cabling and commercial infrastructure project in a 22-floor Durban CBD building. DG Technologies supported floor-by-floor data and telephone cabling, rack readiness, cabinet work, tenant moves, labelling and live cutover coordination across a complex professional and government-tenant environment.
88 Field Street was one of DG Technologies’ largest early commercial infrastructure undertakings.
This was not a residential automation project and it was not a small office network. It was a multi-floor structured cabling and commercial technology project inside a 22-floor Durban CBD building, with floor-by-floor tenant requirements, changing drawings, tight move dates, rack readiness pressure and multiple stakeholders depending on the work being completed correctly.
The public version of this case study is deliberately redacted. We do not publish private drawings, exact tenant layouts, contact details, payment records, rack locations or sensitive government and professional-office operational information. What we can publish is the scale and nature of the work.
A Building, Not A Room
88 Field Street had to be approached as a building infrastructure project.
Across 2015 and 2016, DG Technologies quoted and worked through many individual floors, including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 11th temporary, 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th temporary, 19th and 21st floors, plus wider collective Field Street work.
That matters because high-rise cabling is not solved by one neat equipment list. Every floor has its own drawing, cabinet position, tenant deadline, access condition, ceiling condition, installer coordination issue and final labelling requirement.
Data, Telephone And Tenant Moves
The project involved structured data cabling and telephone cabling across multiple office floors.
By 2016, part of the work had become DG Technologies’ largest data and telephone job to date: many users, many points and a complicated existing environment. That is important because the work was not only new cable. It also involved understanding existing data structures, inherited equipment, telephone requirements and what had to stay operational during moves.
The scale was clear even when looking at only three floors:
- 7th floor: 53 data points and 42 telephone points
- 9th floor: 47 data points and 30 telephone points
- 10th floor: 43 data points and 37 telephone points
That is 143 data points and 109 telephone points across three floors alone.
The project also included extra printer points, revised office requirements, additional voice points, temporary floor requirements, switch placement, rack availability and cabinet mounting. Some floors changed after installation had already started, which meant the team had to keep tracking what had been done, what had changed and what still had to be finished.
The earlier 5th-floor scope also shows the technical spread of the project: installation and termination of telephone and data outlets, test and commissioning of internal telephone links, patch-panel work, coordination with other IT contractors, removal and repositioning of existing infrastructure, and telephone-line reallocation with the relevant service providers.
Rack Readiness Was Critical
On a project of this kind, the rack is not a detail. It is the point where a floor either becomes usable or fails on move-in day.
At one stage, a water-sector tenant move was scheduled into floors 7, 9 and 10. The instruction was clear: racks had to be available urgently, or there would be no data on those floors.
That is the pressure point in commercial cabling.
The cable can be pulled. The points can be terminated. The switches can be ready. But if the rack, cabinet, patching and floor handover are not coordinated, the tenant still cannot work.
That is why DG Technologies treated rack readiness, existing equipment, fibre handoff points and telephone continuity as one joined-up workflow. On commercial projects, data, voice, access control, tenant IT and electrical works often meet in the same small room. Someone has to understand the dependencies before the move happens.
The Practical Site Reality
88 Field Street required constant coordination.
The practical work involved 500m drums of data and telephone cable, urgent cable deliveries, hard hats, ladders, cabinets to be mounted on brick walls, label machines, cable ties, insulation tape, RJ45 connectors, temporary switching, drawings that had to be requested, extra points added by tenants, and network interruptions that had to be announced before equipment was moved into cabinets.
There were also quality decisions that mattered.
When a cable issue arose, the answer was not to hide a join and move on. The instruction was clear: no joins. Pull a new cable.
That is the kind of decision that protects a building years later.
Multi-Stakeholder Coordination
The work took place around contractors, project managers, tenants, government and legal-sector occupants, electrical teams and the building’s wider renovation programme.
DG Technologies’ role grew beyond simply supplying cable. We had to interpret drawings, chase missing information, coordinate with site contacts, help keep floors moving, support the people doing the physical installation and keep a visual sense of what had been completed and what still needed attention.
The same practical discipline that now appears in our residential and industrial projects was visible here already:
- understand the site before acting
- keep track of changed drawings
- document what has been completed
- keep racks and cabinets serviceable
- protect live tenant networks during cutovers
- avoid hidden cable joins
- label the system for the next person
- communicate before taking a floor or switch offline
Why It Still Matters
88 Field Street is important in DG Technologies’ history because it shows the commercial foundation behind our later work.
Before the large Crestron homes, estate projects, hospitality systems and industrial CCTV environments, DG Technologies had already been involved in serious building infrastructure: many floors, many cables, many deadlines, many people, and very little room for casual workmanship.
That experience still affects the way we work.
Whether we are designing a luxury smart home, a warehouse CCTV network or a boardroom AV system, the principle is the same:
the technology people see is only as reliable as the infrastructure they do not see.
