A TV can be securely mounted and still be wrong.

The bracket may be strong. The screen may be level. The cables may be hidden. The picture may work.

But if the TV is too high, if the cabinet below cannot fit the amplifier, if the decoder blocks ventilation, if the remote cannot control the source, or if the screen sits awkwardly above furniture, the installation does not feel finished.

This is why TV height and cabinet space should be decided together.

Not separately.

The screen is only one part of the detail

Many people focus on the TV first.

What size is it?

Which bracket?

Where is the plug?

Where is the conduit?

Those questions matter, but they are not enough. A TV point often includes the source equipment, sound path, data connection, decoder, Apple TV, remote control, amplifier, soundbar, ventilation, cabinet shelves and service access.

If the screen is positioned without considering the cabinet, the room can become awkward quickly.

For example, a TV may look better lower on the wall, but the amplifier still needs to fit in the shelf below. Or the cabinet may have enough space for a decoder but not enough depth for an AV receiver. Or the source device may fit physically but overheat because there is no airflow.

This is not only an AV issue. It is an interior design and joinery coordination issue.

Mounting height should suit the room

There is no single perfect TV height for every space.

A bedroom TV, kitchen TV, gym TV, lounge TV, bar TV and guest-room TV may all need different thinking.

The viewing position matters. Seating height matters. Bed height matters. Cabinet height matters. Distance matters. Whether people are standing, sitting, lying down or entertaining matters.

On some projects, the correct comment is simple: the TV looks too high.

That may sound subjective, but it is often a practical observation. A screen that forces the viewer to look up for long periods can feel uncomfortable. A screen that fights the furniture line can look clumsy. A screen that was placed only to suit an existing plug point may not suit the room.

Cabinet space must include real equipment

Drawings often show a clean cabinet.

Real equipment has depth, heat, cables and power supplies.

An AV receiver may be much deeper than expected. A decoder may need line-of-sight or IR control. A network switch may need airflow. A power supply may need space. HDMI cables need bend radius. Speaker cables need termination room. A rack shelf may need clearance above and behind.

If the cabinet is designed only around external appearance, the installer may be forced to make compromises behind the doors.

That is when clients end up with:

  • equipment pushed too far back,
  • cables crushed behind devices,
  • doors that cannot close properly,
  • hot amplifiers,
  • visible trunking added later,
  • remotes that work only sometimes,
  • sources placed outside the cabinet after the fact.

None of that feels premium.

Remotes and control should be part of the decision

Hiding source equipment changes how it is controlled.

If a decoder or media player is visible under the TV, a normal remote may work. If it is moved into a cabinet, cupboard or head end, the control path needs to be planned.

That might mean infrared emitters, RF remotes, IP control, Crestron integration or a mix of approaches depending on the room.

The owner may want no remotes visible in the main lounge. Guests may still need a familiar DSTV remote in guest rooms. A house manager may need a simpler operating method than the owner. These decisions affect where equipment goes and how the room is handed over.

This is part of source control handover, not an afterthought.

Cable routes need access

The cleanest TV installation can become a problem if no one can reach the cables later.

TVs change. Decoders change. HDMI standards change. Apple TVs change. Soundbars change. Streaming devices change. A source may need to be swapped. A cable may fail. A bracket may need adjustment.

If the wall, cabinet and conduit do not allow future access, the owner pays for that decision later.

Good planning asks:

  • Can the TV be removed safely?
  • Can the bracket be reached?
  • Can HDMI and data cables be replaced?
  • Is there enough conduit capacity?
  • Is there power in the right place?
  • Can the cabinet equipment be serviced?
  • Is there ventilation?
  • Are sources labelled clearly?

These are small details during planning and painful details after finishing.

The best TV installation disappears

A good TV installation should feel simple.

The screen is at the right height. The cabinet below makes sense. The equipment is hidden but serviceable. The remotes work. The sound works. The sources are labelled. The room looks clean. Nobody has to explain a strange workaround.

That result comes from planning the TV, bracket, cabinet, cable route, power and control as one detail.
