First fix is the point where a technology mistake starts becoming expensive.
Before then, a route can still be changed on a drawing. A cabinet can still be resized. A ceiling access point can still be protected. A TV conduit can still be added. A camera route can still be moved before paving, plaster, ceilings and joinery make the change painful.
After first fix, the same decision often becomes a site problem.
That is why DG Technologies prefers to review plans before first fix on serious homes. The review is not about selling every possible system. It is about making sure the building is ready for the technology the client expects to use.
The review looks for missing routes
Most technology problems in new builds are not caused by the final equipment.
They are caused by missing routes.
The plan review should check routes for:
- Wi-Fi access points;
- TV and display points;
- CCTV cameras;
- gate and intercom positions;
- audio zones and speaker positions;
- fibre entry to the head-end;
- DStv dish route to the head-end;
- lighting-control panels or modules;
- cinema projector, screen and speaker routes;
- future conduits where later access will be difficult.
The earlier these routes are marked, the easier it is for the electrician and builder to allow for them cleanly.

The head-end must be checked before cables are pulled
A technology plan review must confirm where the head-end is.
The head-end is where the cables end and where the equipment connects. It may hold the router, switches, fibre equipment, CCTV recorder, audio amplifiers, automation processor, DStv distribution and power protection.
If the head-end is too small, too hot, too shallow or badly positioned, the whole home becomes harder to support.
Before first fix, the review should ask:
- Is there enough physical space?
- Is there enough depth for equipment?
- Is there suitable power?
- Is ventilation required?
- Can cables enter cleanly?
- Can a technician work there later?
- Does fibre reach this location?
- Does the CCTV, Wi-Fi and AV design all return to a sensible point?
This is not a decorative decision. It is the service point for the home.
Wi-Fi must be reviewed against the building, not only the floor plan
A floor plan does not show everything that affects Wi-Fi.
Concrete slabs, thick walls, steel, glass, staircases, long passages, outdoor spaces, garages and staff areas all matter. A plan review should identify likely access point locations before the ceiling plan is fixed.
For each access point, the review should confirm:
- wired Cat6 backhaul;
- PoE power;
- future access;
- ceiling depth and mounting practicality;
- conflicts with lights, speakers, AC grilles and bulkheads;
- whether the position makes sense for real coverage.
In many South African homes, Wi-Fi needs proper access point planning from day one. It should not be fixed later with boosters.

CCTV review must start with the view
A camera route is only useful if the camera sees something that matters.
Before first fix, the plan review should consider:
- driveway views;
- pedestrian gates;
- vehicle gates;
- garage approaches;
- staff and service entrances;
- boundary lines;
- delivery points;
- outdoor entertainment areas;
- blind spots.
The camera view and cable route should be reviewed together. A neat cable route to a poor view is still a poor CCTV design.
The review should also check whether camera cables are protected, whether junction boxes remain serviceable, and whether future gate or intercom routes are worth allowing for while the property is open.

The review protects the electrician too
A plan review is not there to criticise the electrician.
It helps the electrician.
When the technology contractor gives clear routes, conduit sizes, draw-box requirements, head-end needs and room schedules, the electrician is not left guessing. The work becomes more coordinated and the client gets fewer surprises later.
The electrician should know which routes need draw wire, which points must not be looped, where direct routes are important, where future access is required and where low-voltage cables must be protected.
The best projects happen when the electrician and technology contractor solve the problem together.
Interior finishes should be protected before they exist
Plan review is also about protecting finished surfaces before they are installed.
A TV route missed before a stone wall is complete becomes expensive. A speaker position missed before a timber ceiling is finished becomes awkward. A rack cabinet with no ventilation can become a support problem. A hidden access point with no access hatch can become a maintenance problem.
The plan review should look at:
- joinery;
- feature walls;
- ceiling details;
- timber or decorative ceilings;
- stone and tile finishes;
- cabinet ventilation;
- hidden access panels;
- speaker and AP access.
The goal is simple: make the technology disappear without making it impossible to service.
A review should produce clear actions
The output of a first-fix plan review should not be a vague conversation.
It should produce actions:
- mark this TV route;
- move this access point;
- allow this conduit;
- confirm this head-end position;
- add this draw box;
- protect this future route;
- confirm this lighting-control circuit;
- reserve this rack space;
- label this route clearly.
If nobody can update the drawing after the review, the review was not practical enough.
Review before the site decides for you
Every project has pressure.
The builder wants to keep moving. The electrician needs answers. The architect is protecting the design. The client is still making decisions. The interior designer is refining finishes.
