But on a premium home, the builder does need to understand that low-voltage technology is part of the building programme.
Wi-Fi, CCTV, access control, intercoms, TV points, DStv, fibre, audio, cinema, lighting control and automation all need routes, openings, access, protection and timing. If those items are treated as “the tech guys will sort it out later,” the project can become harder than it needs to be.

Low-voltage routes are easy to damage
Low-voltage cables are often installed while many trades are still working.
That creates risk.
A cable can be cut, crushed, pulled tight, plastered over, trapped behind joinery, damaged in a ceiling, blocked inside conduit or hidden behind a finish. The cable may still look present, but the system later behaves badly.
Builders can help by making sure:
- low-voltage routes are known on site;
- conduits are not crushed or blocked;
- draw wires remain in place;
- cable ends are not buried;
- access points are not closed permanently;
- other trades know which routes matter;
- hidden routes are photographed before closure.
That kind of coordination saves days later.
The head-end is a working space, not a cupboard
The rack or head-end needs to be treated as a working technical space.
It may contain network switches, patch panels, CCTV recorder, fibre equipment, router, DStv distribution, audio amplifiers, automation processor and power protection.
The builder should protect:
- cabinet depth;
- cable entry;
- power points;
- ventilation;
- access clearance;
- lighting;
- dust protection during construction;
- final service access.
A beautiful cupboard that is too shallow, too hot or impossible to work in becomes a long-term support problem.

Ceiling work affects Wi-Fi and speakers
Ceilings are busy.
Downlights, air-conditioning, speakers, access points, cameras, bulkheads, curtain pockets, sprinkler routes, beams and ceiling details can all compete for the same space.
Before ceilings close, builders should confirm that the technology contractor has reviewed:
- Wi-Fi access point positions;
- ceiling speaker positions;
- camera or soffit points;
- projector routes;
- ceiling access for future service;
- conflicts with lighting and HVAC;
- required recess depth where equipment is hidden.
This is especially important in premium homes where the final ceiling must look clean.
TV walls need proper route protection
TV walls are often finished with joinery, stone, timber, paint, wallpaper or decorative panels.
Before those finishes are installed, the builder should confirm that the AV route is correct.
Ask:
- Is the TV height confirmed?
- Is the route to the equipment location installed?
- Is the conduit large enough?
- Is there draw wire?
- Is the wall bracket support allowed for?
- Will the cabinet have ventilation?
- Can future cable replacement happen without damaging the finish?

Exterior routes should be protected before paving and landscaping
Outdoor technology often becomes expensive when it is planned late.
Camera routes, gate routes, intercoms, driveway crossings, garden audio, outdoor Wi-Fi and boundary points may all need conduit or protected cable paths.
Builders can prevent problems by asking early:
- Which routes cross driveways or paving?
- Which routes go to gates or boundary walls?
- Are future camera or intercom routes needed?
- Are draw boxes accessible?
- Are exterior junctions protected?
- Will landscaping bury something that needs service access?
It is much easier to protect these routes before paving, retaining walls, garden beds and exterior finishes are complete.
Labelling should happen before confusion starts
On a large project, cables multiply quickly.
If they are not labelled, the rack becomes a guessing exercise.
The builder does not need to label every technology cable personally, but the site process should allow the technology contractor to label and document routes before they disappear into ceilings, walls or cabinets.
Clear labels make later work faster:
- camera routes;
- access point routes;
- TV points;
- speaker cables;
- fibre paths;
- intercom and gate cables;
- spare conduits;
- cabinet locations.
Unlabelled cables waste time and increase the chance of mistakes.
Builders control timing
The builder often controls when areas close.
That makes communication critical.
Before an area is closed, boxed, tiled, plastered, paved or fitted with joinery, the builder should confirm whether the technology contractor has finished what needs to happen in that space.
This applies to:
- rack rooms;
- TV walls;
- ceilings with speakers or APs;
- cinema rooms;
- gate routes;
- exterior CCTV routes;
- cabinet spaces;
- fibre and dish paths.
A five-minute confirmation can prevent a costly reopen.
Low-voltage planning protects the finish
Good low-voltage coordination is not about making the builder’s job more complicated.
It protects the build.
The client sees clean ceilings, tidy TV walls, hidden equipment, working Wi-Fi, useful cameras, neat control points and technology that feels intentional. That result depends on the builder protecting routes before the finished surfaces exist.
