One of the things that has always defined the way I work is that I never feel comfortable asking someone to spend more money than they genuinely need to.

That may sound strange coming from someone who designs and installs professional Crestron Home automation, lighting control, multiroom audio, CCTV, networking and cinema systems. These are not cheap systems. A proper smart-home quotation can be a serious number, especially on a large home, a major renovation or a high-end estate project.

But that is exactly why the conversation matters.

When I present a significant quotation, I often understand exactly what is going through the client’s mind. Building a home or renovating properly is expensive. Every additional line item has an impact. Every trade has a number. Every finish, fitting, drawing change and site decision adds pressure.

That understanding has shaped the way I approach every proposal I produce.

It is also why I never mind when a client says they are getting comparison quotes. In fact, I encourage it. Not because I believe every quote is equal, but because I believe the most valuable conversation is usually not about finding the cheapest installer.

It is about understanding where money can be saved without damaging the experience the family will live with for years.

Do not remove items at random

One of the first things you will notice in a DG Technologies quotation is that we often include options, notes and alternatives.

That is deliberate.

If the proposal sits outside your comfort zone, I do not want you to simply remove items at random. I also do not want you to settle for inferior equipment because the number feels high at first glance.

I would rather sit down and explain where the real savings exist.

Those savings are not always obvious from a price list. They come from understanding how the home will actually be used, what the equipment does, which features matter, which features look good only on paper, and which parts of an existing system can still earn their place.

The cheapest quote is not always the clever quote.

The clever quote is the one that spends money where it matters and avoids spending it where it does not.

Example 1: Does every light really need dimming?

Lighting control is one of the easiest places to overspend without noticing.

Sometimes an architect, designer or homeowner starts with the assumption that every lighting circuit should be dimmable. On paper, that sounds premium. If the home is automated, why not dim everything?

But real homes are not lived in on paper.

Take a passage, utility room, garage, storeroom or certain exterior service circuits. Most people walk in, switch the light on, do what they need to do, and walk out again. They are not creating a scene. They are not setting mood. They are not dimming that area to 37 percent for dinner.

If removing dimming from a circuit like that saves approximately R12,000 while having virtually no impact on the daily experience, that is a conversation worth having.

You have not bought an inferior system.

You have simply chosen not to pay for a feature you are unlikely to use.

There are also technical reasons to be careful. Modern LED fittings and drivers do not all behave the same way. Some dim beautifully. Some flicker. Some buzz. Some need a specific driver or dimming method. Some are more reliable when switched through a relay rather than forced onto a dimmer they do not need.

That is why lighting control should be designed circuit by circuit. Good lighting design is not dimming everything. Good lighting design is choosing the correct control method for each load and each room.

Example 2: Audio zones should follow how the home is used

The same thinking applies to audio.

On a set of plans, six rooms may look like six separate audio zones. Lounge. Dining room. Kitchen. Patio. Bar. Passage.

But once you understand how the family uses the home, the answer may be different.

If the kitchen and dining room naturally operate together, they may not need separate sources all day long. If an open-plan entertainment area is always used as one space, splitting it into too many independent zones may add cost and complexity without improving the experience.

This is where product knowledge also matters.

For example, Crestron DM NAX has changed the way we can think about multiroom audio. A DM NAX 4-zone amplifier includes streaming and modern audio distribution capability in a much cleaner way than older designs that often needed separate external AirPlay units, extra source devices and more points of failure.

If I also know that a client already owns a quality amplifier from a previous home, and I know the kitchen and dining room will almost always play the same music together, I can redesign the system around that reality.

Instead of specifying a larger amplifier simply because more rooms appear on the plan, we may be able to combine sensible spaces, use a passive zone correctly, repurpose an existing amplifier, and still deliver the same everyday result.

In one design conversation, that kind of decision can save around R35,000 without reducing reliability, usability or sound quality.

That is not cutting corners.

That is understanding the home.

Reusing equipment is not always a compromise

Another major saving can come from existing equipment.

Many homes already have useful hardware: amplifiers, speakers, cabling, racks, remotes, network equipment or older control infrastructure. The wrong approach is to throw everything away because replacing it is easier for the installer.

The opposite mistake is also dangerous: keeping everything because it makes the quote look cheaper.

The right question is simple:

Does this item still add value without compromising the system?

A good power amplifier is still a good power amplifier if it is reliable, suitable, serviceable and correctly integrated. Existing speakers may still be worth keeping if they suit the room and the client likes how they sound. Existing cable routes may be valuable if they are correct, documented and usable.

But old equipment should not be kept blindly. If a dimmer is wrong for modern LED loads, it should be replaced. If an old network is unstable, it should be redesigned. If a touch panel is unsupported and creating risk, the client should know.

This is the thinking behind how DG Technologies decides what to keep and what to replace.

We are not trying to preserve old equipment for sentimental reasons. We are trying to avoid waste while protecting reliability.

The best savings happen early

This is why I encourage clients to involve DG Technologies as early as possible in a project.

By the time construction has begun, many expensive decisions have already been made. Those decisions may have been made by excellent architects, interior designers, builders or electricians, but they may not have been made with day-to-day smart-home use in mind.

That is not criticism. It is simply a difference in speciality.

An architect thinks about space, flow, proportion and structure. An interior designer thinks about finishes, lighting mood, furniture, sightlines and detail. An electrician thinks about power, circuits and compliance. A smart-home integrator thinks about how the technology will actually behave after the family moves in.

Those worlds overlap, but they are not the same.

If we are involved early, we can help decide:

  • which rooms genuinely need audio
  • which rooms need independent audio zones
  • which lighting circuits deserve dimming
  • which circuits are better on relay control
  • where Wi-Fi access points should go
  • where TV points, fibre, CCTV and conduits should be allowed for
  • whether existing equipment can be reused
  • which items should be installed now and which can be prepared for later
  • where the rack or head-end should live
  • what needs documentation for future support

It is far cheaper to make those decisions on drawings than after ceilings close.

The question every client should ask

My job is not simply to supply equipment.

My job is to understand how you live.

I need to know which features you will use every day, which ones you will appreciate occasionally, and which ones look impressive on a proposal but are unlikely to add meaningful value to your lifestyle.

The goal has never been to sell the most expensive system.

The goal is to deliver the right system.

One that is reliable, intuitive, built to last and designed around your family, not around a product catalogue.

If there is a way to save money without compromising the experience, I will say so. Sometimes that means recommending less. Sometimes it means reusing equipment. Sometimes it means changing a lighting circuit from dimming to relay control. Sometimes it means combining audio zones. Sometimes it means phasing the project properly instead of forcing everything into day one.

So if you receive a DG Technologies proposal and the number feels uncomfortable, ask the question directly:

“Dave, where can we save money?”

More often than not, the answer is not found by choosing cheaper products.

It is found by making smarter decisions.
