Smart home
“Smart home” is the broadest phrase.
It can describe almost anything connected to an app: smart lights, Wi-Fi cameras, video doorbells, smart plugs, smart locks, voice assistants, app-controlled air conditioning, streaming audio or an automated gate.
For smaller homes or single-room upgrades, smart-home products can be useful. They are often affordable, quick to install and easy to understand. The weakness appears when the home becomes larger or more demanding. Each product may have its own app, cloud account, Wi-Fi dependency and support path.

Lighting control
Lighting control is often confused with smart bulbs.

In a proper lighting control design, the important questions are not only “can this light dim?” The questions are:
- should this circuit be dimmed or switched?
- is the LED load compatible with the module?
- what scenes does the room need?
- where should keypads be positioned?
- what should happen at night?
- how should pathway lighting work?
- what should happen during entertaining, cinema use or cleaning?
Good lighting control makes a home feel calm. Poor lighting control makes expensive fittings feel unreliable.
Smart lighting
Smart lighting is the phrase homeowners often search when they want lighting they can control from a phone.
That may be enough for a bedroom, study or small renovation. For a high-end home, smart lighting should normally be planned as lighting control, especially when the property has many circuits, LED loads, architectural lighting, outdoor areas and multiple users.
The difference is simple: smart lighting controls a light. Lighting control designs how the home feels.
AV installation
AV means audio visual.
In a home, AV may include TVs, distributed video, streaming devices, music systems, in-ceiling speakers, outdoor audio, cinema rooms, projectors, screens, remotes and control systems.
Good multiroom audio and home cinema work is not only about choosing good equipment. It includes speaker positions, cable routes, amplifier selection, control labels, source planning, ventilation, Wi-Fi reliability and how the client will actually use the system.
If the room looks beautiful but nobody knows how to turn the music on, the system has failed at the human level.
Wi-Fi and networking
Many clients ask for Wi-Fi when the real requirement is networking.
Wi-Fi is the wireless coverage people feel on their phone. Networking is the infrastructure that makes that Wi-Fi stable: cabling, switches, router, firewall, VLANs, access point placement, rack layout, power and remote support.
For large South African homes with concrete walls, multiple floors, garages, staff areas, pool houses and outdoor entertainment areas, “one strong router” is rarely the correct answer.
A proper network installation gives the smart home a foundation. Without it, cameras buffer, apps disconnect, audio zones drop, remote support becomes difficult and the automation system gets blamed for network problems.
CCTV and security
CCTV is another term that can mean very different things.
Some clients mean four basic cameras and phone viewing. Others need 4K IP cameras, NVR recording, perimeter coverage, analytics, access control, gate integration, remote viewing, staff access and long-term footage search.
A good CCTV installation is not a camera count. It is a coverage plan.
The design should consider entrances, driveway movement, blind spots, lighting conditions, mounting height, cable routes, network capacity, recording time, app usability and power protection.
Low-voltage planning
Architects and builders often talk about low-voltage infrastructure.
This includes the cabling and conduit for Wi-Fi access points, TV points, speakers, CCTV cameras, fibre, intercoms, gates, access control, lighting control keypads and equipment racks.
This is one of the most important parts of a smart home, because it is usually hidden before the client sees anything working.
