One of the biggest misunderstandings in smart-home lighting is the idea that every light should be dimmable.
It sounds logical at first.
If a home is being automated, why not give every circuit full dimming control? Why not make every downlight, pendant, garden light, bulkhead, passage light and feature light adjustable from zero to one hundred percent?
Because more control is not always better control.
In lighting design, as in most parts of home automation, the correct question is not “What can we automate?”
The better question is “What should we automate, and what is the most reliable way to do it?”
At DG Technologies, we do not believe good lighting control means dimming everything by default. Good lighting control means designing scenes, circuits and control logic around the way the home is actually used.
Sometimes dimming is absolutely the right choice.
Sometimes a relay is the better engineering decision.
Dimming has a purpose
Dimming is valuable when it improves the room.
In a lounge, cinema, dining room, bedroom, bar, entertainment space or outdoor patio, dimming can make a huge difference. It allows a room to change mood. It helps a cinema start gently. It lets a dining area move from bright service lighting to a softer evening scene. It helps a bedroom feel calm at night.
This is where scene-based control works beautifully.
A single keypad button can bring several lighting circuits to carefully chosen levels. The client does not need to adjust each light manually. The system handles the balance.
That is the real value of smart lighting.
Not just “the light can dim”, but “the room can become the right room for what is happening now.”
In a properly designed Crestron Home system, those scenes can become natural: Entertain, Dinner, Cinema, Evening, Pathway, All Off, Security, Cleaning or whatever makes sense for the home.
Dimming is powerful when it serves that purpose.
Not every circuit benefits from dimming
Some lights simply do not need to be dimmed.
Storerooms, garages, certain passage lights, plant room lighting, some exterior security lights, utility areas, staff areas and service lighting may only need reliable on/off control.
In those spaces, dimming adds cost and complexity without improving daily use.
There are also circuits where dimming can create problems if the fittings or lamps are not suitable. Modern LED lighting has improved dramatically, but LED compatibility still matters. Not every LED driver behaves well on every dimmer. Some flicker. Some buzz. Some do not dim low enough. Some fail early when paired with the wrong control method.
This is especially common in homes where older dimming systems were originally designed around incandescent or halogen loads, then later retrofitted with modern LEDs.
The homeowner sees flickering lights.
The real issue may be that the control method no longer matches the load.
Relay control is not a downgrade
A relay is often misunderstood.
Some clients hear “relay” and think it sounds less advanced than a dimmer.
That is not the right way to look at it.
A relay is a controlled switch. It turns a circuit on and off reliably. For many modern LED circuits, that may be exactly what the circuit needs.
If the light is only ever required to be on or off, relay control can be simpler, more robust and more cost-effective than dimming. It can also reduce compatibility issues where dimming is unnecessary.
In other words, choosing a relay is not always a compromise.
Sometimes it is the correct engineering solution.
This is an important part of DG Technologies’ design philosophy. We do not try to justify a smart-home quotation by filling it with the most expensive hardware possible. We look at what the client actually needs and choose the correct equipment for that job.
If we would not spend the money ourselves, we are careful about asking the client to spend it.
Modern LED lighting changed the conversation
Older homes often used incandescent or halogen lighting. Those loads were generally straightforward to dim with the right dimming equipment.
Modern LED lighting is different.
LED fittings and drivers are more efficient, but they are also more electronic. They have compatibility requirements. They may need leading-edge dimming, trailing-edge dimming, 0-10V, DALI, DMX, relay control or a specific driver type depending on the application.
This is why lighting control should not be designed casually.
The automation specialist, electrician, architect, interior designer and lighting supplier should ideally coordinate before everything is installed.
If the lighting fittings are chosen without considering control, the automation system may be forced to work around decisions that were already made.
That is not ideal.
Planning early gives the client a better result.
It also helps avoid expensive corrections later.
The best lighting systems feel simple
Clients do not want to think about dimmer modules, relay modules, loads, drivers and compatibility charts.
That is our job.
The client wants the house to feel right.
When they arrive home at night, certain lights should come on. When they press Entertain, the home should feel ready for guests. When they start the cinema, the room should change. When they go to bed, the house should shut down in a way that feels calm and secure.
That experience may use dimmers in some areas and relays in others.
The client does not need to know which is which.
They only need to experience a home that behaves properly.
That is why good lighting design is not measured by how many circuits are dimmed. It is measured by how well the home works.
Over-designing can waste money
In high-end homes, it is easy for technology to become excessive.
Every room can be specified with more control, more hardware and more complexity than it genuinely needs. On paper, that can look impressive. In real life, it can become unnecessary spend.
We see this often when assessing older systems or redesigning proposed systems.
The question is not whether a more expensive option exists. It usually does.
The question is whether it adds enough value to justify itself.
If a passage light is never dimmed, why pay for dimming? If a service area only needs reliable on/off control, why complicate it? If a client uses the Crestron app and keypads comfortably, does every room need an expensive touch panel?

Good engineering removes waste without removing useful features.
There is a big difference.
The right lighting control depends on the room
A cinema room may need careful dimming.
A kitchen may need strong task lighting, feature lighting and evening scenes.
A dining room may need softer mood control.
A garden may need security scenes and entertainment scenes.
A garage may simply need reliable light.
These are different requirements.
They should not all be treated the same.
This is where a proper conversation with the homeowner matters. How do you use this room? When do you use it? Is it a daily space or an occasional space? Do you entertain here? Do you need low-level night lighting? Do you want one button to prepare the room? Is the circuit decorative, functional, security-related or purely practical?
The answers shape the design.
That is much better than blindly automating everything.
Bad lighting decisions can damage a good product
Crestron is a strong platform.
But even a strong platform can feel poor if it is designed badly.
If the wrong loads are put on dimmers, the client may blame the automation system for flickering. If scenes are badly planned, the client may think smart lighting is awkward. If circuits are grouped incorrectly, the room may never feel right. If no one explains the keypad logic properly, the system may feel intimidating.
The product is only part of the result.
The decisions around the product matter just as much.
That is why DG Technologies focuses heavily on system design, documentation, handover and support. The goal is not to sell the most complicated lighting system. The goal is to deliver a home that still makes sense years later.
Smart lighting should make the home calmer
The best smart lighting systems do not feel busy.
They feel calm.
They make the home easier to live in. They reduce unnecessary switching. They set the right mood without making the homeowner think about every circuit. They support security, comfort and daily use.
Sometimes that requires dimming.
Sometimes it requires relays.
Sometimes it requires fewer circuits, better grouping or simpler keypad logic.
That is the point: the design should serve the homeowner, not the equipment list.
