If you search how to setup home automation, most answers start with devices.

In a serious home, that is the wrong starting point.

A professional home automation setup starts with the building, the people, the rooms and the infrastructure. The devices come later. If the cable routes, network, equipment space and control logic are wrong, the system can become difficult to finish no matter how good the hardware is.

How to setup home automation: start with the rooms

Before choosing equipment, walk through the home room by room.

Ask:

  • Which rooms need TVs?
  • Which rooms need music?
  • Which rooms need Wi-Fi because people work or stream there?
  • Which rooms need keypads or touch panels?
  • Which outdoor areas need lighting, cameras or audio?
  • Which spaces need to remain simple for guests?
  • Which areas will staff use?
  • Which equipment should be hidden?
  • Which equipment must remain accessible?

This becomes the technology schedule for the home.

Without it, the project team can easily over-specify unimportant areas and under-provide important ones.

Decide where the head end will be

The head end is where the system comes together.

It may hold the fibre/router equipment, network switches, patch panels, CCTV recorder, automation processor, amplifiers, power supplies and support documentation.

It needs:

  • enough physical space,
  • ventilation,
  • power,
  • UPS or protected power where required,
  • cable entry,
  • service clearance,
  • a route from the important technology points.

If the head end is decided too late, the whole installation becomes a compromise.

Plan cabling before you plan apps

Wireless control does not mean wireless infrastructure.

For a proper home automation system, plan:

  • Cat6 cabling to TVs, access points and control locations,
  • speaker cable to audio zones,
  • conduit to TV points and projectors,
  • CCTV cable routes,
  • fibre or data uplinks where buildings are separated,
  • draw boxes where conduit bends make cable replacement difficult,
  • spare routes for future changes.

This is why the AV and automation contractor should be involved before first fix. The pipework is often the real automation plan.

Build the network properly

The home automation setup depends on the network.

Do not treat the router as a throwaway internet box. IP reservations, Wi-Fi access points, managed switches, camera networks, remote access and controller communication all affect reliability.

In our experience, many “automation faults” begin after someone changes the router, replaces fibre equipment or moves network hardware without preserving the original network design.

Commission the system after the home is lived in

Initial programming is only the first step.

After furniture arrives and the family starts using the home, lighting scenes, room names, music grouping, app favourites and guest controls often need refinement.

This is normal. It should be planned for.

A good home automation setup includes handover and adjustment, not only installation.

  3. plan the head end,
  4. design the cabling,
  5. build the network,
  6. choose the platform,
  7. install cleanly,
  8. commission properly,
  9. document everything,
