When a home already has technology installed, the first question is rarely simple.
Should the old equipment be replaced? Can some of it be reused? Is the problem really the product, or is it the wiring, network, power, programming or documentation around it?
Those questions matter because a serious smart-home, AV, CCTV or Crestron system is not just a collection of devices. It is a connected system. One weak decision in the background can make expensive equipment feel unreliable.
At DG Technologies, we do not start by assuming everything old must go. We also do not assume everything old should stay. The right answer depends on evidence: how the system was built, how it is used, what still has value, what is causing problems and what the client actually needs from the home.
That is the difference between replacing equipment and making a proper engineering decision.
The first step is understanding what exists
Before recommending a replacement, we try to understand the system as it stands.
That may include the rack, network, Wi-Fi, CCTV recorder, cameras, lighting modules, keypads, touch panels, amplifiers, speakers, TV distribution, power supplies, cabling and control processor.
In some homes this is straightforward. In others, especially older premium homes, the system may have been expanded over many years by different contractors. A later upgrade may depend on an older cable. A new TV may depend on an old HDMI extender. A touch panel fault may actually be a network issue. A lighting problem may be caused by modern LED lamps running on dimmers that were originally designed for older loads.
That is why we prefer assessment before assumption.
A proper assessment asks:
- What still works reliably?
- What is no longer supportable?
- What is unsafe, overloaded or badly installed?
- What can be reused without compromising the result?
- What will become a problem later if it is left alone?
- What documentation exists, and what needs to be recreated?
Those questions protect the client from two expensive mistakes: replacing good equipment unnecessarily, and keeping bad infrastructure because it is hidden from view.
Reuse is good only when it is responsible
Reusing existing equipment can save a client a lot of money, but only when the equipment is still fit for purpose.
A good amplifier, for example, may still be a good amplifier. If it is reliable, suitable for the speakers and easy enough to integrate into the new design, replacing it may add cost without improving the homeowner’s daily experience.
The same can apply to speakers, keypads, screens, racks, network cabinets and some cabling.
But reuse must be tested. It should not be guessed.
Existing cabling is a good example. If a system needs four usable cables and only two exist, the old cable route cannot magically become correct because it is cheaper to keep it. At that point the decision is practical: run the correct cabling, redesign the system around the limitation, or explain clearly what compromise the client would be accepting.
Good reuse is not about forcing old equipment into a new design. It is about keeping what still adds value and removing what creates risk.
Replacement should solve the real problem
One of the most common mistakes in technology projects is replacing the visible device while ignoring the reason it failed.
A camera may be replaced, but the real issue may be poor cable termination, water ingress, bad switch ports, power problems or the wrong recording setup.
A Wi-Fi access point may be replaced, but the real problem may be placement, weak backhaul, a crowded channel plan, a single router doing too much, or a network that was never designed for the size of the property.
A Crestron touch panel may be blamed, but the problem may sit in the processor, program, Cresnet power, network addressing, lighting module, rack wiring or missing documentation.
Replacing hardware without diagnosing the system can make a quotation look decisive, but it does not always solve the problem.
That is why our legacy Crestron assessment approach is built around testing and tracing before recommending a full replacement.
Sometimes simplification is the upgrade
Clients often expect an upgrade to mean more equipment.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes the best upgrade is a simpler system that is easier to live with, easier to explain and easier to support.
An open-plan area may not need three separate audio zones if the rooms naturally operate as one space. A home may not need a touch panel in every room if the Crestron Home app, keypads and a carefully planned interface already give the client proper control. A lighting system may not need complex dimming everywhere if reliable relay switching is the better technical answer for certain modern LED loads.
This is an important part of our philosophy: we do not remove useful features, but we do remove waste.
The goal is not to sell the most impressive list of hardware. The goal is to leave the client with a system that works, makes sense and can be supported years later.

Safety and compliance are not optional
Some decisions are not about preference. They are about doing the job properly.
If a power circuit, cable size, breaker, cabinet layout or lighting arrangement is not suitable, the correct answer may cost more than the shortcut. That is not upselling. It is the difference between a neat quotation and a reliable installation.
This matters especially in homes where low-voltage systems meet electrical infrastructure. Lighting control, motorised blinds, network equipment, CCTV power, rack ventilation and control cabling all need to be treated with respect.
A smart home should not only look elegant from the app. It should also be understandable and serviceable when the cabinet door is opened.
Documentation decides the future cost
Documentation is often treated as admin. We see it as part of the product.
If nobody knows where the cables run, which switch port feeds which access point, which lighting circuit belongs to which keypad, or which rack device feeds which room, every future service call becomes slower and more expensive.
Good documentation helps:
- future fault finding,
- future renovations,
- future upgrades,
- new contractors working on the property,
- insurance or replacement discussions,
- and long-term ownership of the system.
This is especially important for larger homes in Durban, Umhlanga, Mount Edgecombe, Zimbali, Simbithi and other KZN estate environments where technology is often spread across multiple rooms, DBs, racks and outdoor areas.
You are not only paying for the installation. You are paying for the knowledge left behind.
The client should understand the decision
A good recommendation should be explainable in plain language.
If we recommend keeping something, the client should understand why it is still valuable.
If we recommend replacing something, the client should understand what risk it removes or what improvement it creates.
If we recommend simplifying part of the system, the client should understand why the simpler option may be better for daily use.
That is how trust is built. Not by hiding behind technical language, and not by selling the biggest system possible.
A practical checklist before approving an upgrade quote
Before approving a smart-home, AV, CCTV, Wi-Fi or Crestron upgrade, ask these questions:
- Has the existing system been properly assessed?
- Has the installer explained what can be reused?
- Has the installer explained what should not be reused?
- Are cabling, power, networking and documentation included in the thinking?
- Does the quote solve the real problem or only replace visible equipment?
- Will the system be easier to support later?
- Are unnecessary touch panels, zones, modules or devices being added?
- Is the design based on how the home is actually used?
- Will the homeowner understand the system at handover?
The best answer is not always “replace everything”.
It is also not always “keep everything”.
The best answer is the one that gives the client reliable daily use, fair value, proper documentation and a system that still makes sense years after the work is complete.
