Some lessons in this industry do not come from training manuals.
They come from years of standing on site with drawings in your hand, ceilings half closed, clients waiting for answers, electricians asking where the pipe must go, builders trying to keep momentum, and an AV system that will only work properly if everyone makes the right decisions early enough.
That is one of the reasons DG Technologies places so much emphasis on coordination.
Over years of electrical and AV coordination, the same pattern has repeated itself. Many of the projects that shaped DG Technologies were not simple AV installations. They were joint electrical, low-voltage, automation, lighting-control, cabling, rack and site-management projects where the finished result depended on more than one trade understanding the same plan.
For more than a decade, David Morel worked closely alongside Rowan Goss and the Goss Electrical team on demanding KZN residential and commercial projects. The names and details are mostly private, but the lessons are not.
Those years included work around Moosa’s home, Alan Thornton’s home, a Zimbali property, Richard from City Couriers’ properties, 88 Field Street and many other sites where AV and electrical work had to meet cleanly.
The point is not to list private projects for the sake of it.
The point is to explain what that kind of coordination teaches, and why those lessons still shape how DG Technologies approaches electrical, AV and automation work today.
The first lesson: technology does not live separately from the building
A smart home is often sold as a touch panel, app, keypad, processor, lighting module, speaker system, CCTV recorder, Wi-Fi network or equipment rack.
But none of those things live in isolation.
They depend on:
- where the electrical DBs are placed,
- how lighting circuits are grouped,
- whether conduits were installed at the correct size,
- whether pipe routes are accessible,
- whether the rack has space, ventilation and power,
- whether the ceiling can still be opened,
- whether TV positions were agreed before finishes,
- whether speaker wiring was checked before bulkheads were closed,
- whether data points and cabinets were coordinated with real equipment,
- and whether the people on site knew which decisions affected other trades.
That is why DG Technologies does not treat AV and automation as an afterthought.
If the electrical work is planned without the automation team, the automation system may inherit avoidable problems. If the AV routes are not agreed before plastering, the finished home may need compromises. If a cinema ceiling is closed before speaker wiring is confirmed, a small oversight becomes a finished-surface problem.
The building decides more than most clients realise.
The second lesson: first fix is where expensive mistakes become invisible
First fix is not glamorous.
There are no finished touch panels. No polished app screens. No clean rack photos. No cinema demonstration. No lighting scenes.
But first fix is where many of the most expensive decisions are made.
In real project conversations, the pressure often sounds very ordinary:
- plastering has already started,
- the builder wants to close a ceiling,
- a bulkhead is ready to be skimmed,
- the electrical team needs to know where pipework must go,
- the AV team needs to confirm cabinet depth,
- drawings need to be marked up,
- speaker wiring must be checked,
- and someone must decide whether a cable route is acceptable before it disappears behind finishes.
Those moments are easy to underestimate.
But they are exactly where future supportability is won or lost.
This is why DG Technologies keeps writing about low-voltage first-fix requirements, AV drawings and early architect coordination. It is not theory. It is the result of years of seeing what happens when these decisions are made too late.
The third lesson: a DB is not just an electrical box
For a conventional electrical project, a DB is mostly about power distribution and compliance.
For a smart home, the DB can also affect lighting control, relay modules, dimming decisions, control wiring, load grouping, future access, fault finding and whether a room behaves the way the homeowner expects.
That means the automation team and electrical team have to talk before the work is boxed in.
Questions that matter include:
- Which circuits are actually going to be controlled?
- Which circuits need dimming, and which only need relay control?
- Where will lighting modules or relay modules be housed?
- Is there space for future expansion?
- How will circuits be labelled?
- Which loads need manual override?
- What happens if a client needs temporary control before automation is complete?
- Can the next technician understand the DB years later?
Those are practical questions, not luxury extras.
In a premium home, the client should never feel that the technology is fighting the electrical installation. The lights should work. Scenes should behave predictably. Faults should be traceable. Expansion should not require guessing what was done years earlier.
The fourth lesson: drawings are only useful if trades can use them
DG Technologies has worked on projects where drawings, markups, A1 prints, site notes, cabinet decisions, floor plans and visual progress tracking were not optional extras.
They were the only way to keep everyone aligned.
On a large site such as 88 Field Street, the project could not live in one person’s memory. Floors changed. Tenants moved. Cabinets had to be ready. Cable counts had to be tracked. Work had to be sequenced. People needed to understand what had been completed and what still needed attention.
The same principle applies in large homes.
A luxury residence may have fewer floors than a commercial tower, but the coordination can be just as detailed. There may be main-house AV, cottage Wi-Fi, gate cameras, outdoor speakers, staff areas, cinema rooms, lighting panels, inverter-backed circuits, remote access and future expansion routes.
If those requirements are not drawn clearly, the site team is forced to interpret.
Interpretation is where mistakes creep in.
The fifth lesson: existing equipment must be inspected, not assumed
One repeated pattern in older homes and renovations is existing equipment.
Sometimes the client already owns amplifiers, decoders, Apple TVs, speakers, access points, brackets, cabinets, remotes or cabling from a previous installation. Sometimes those items are worth reusing. Sometimes they should be replaced. Sometimes the quote needs to change because equipment already on site was not known about at the beginning.
The wrong approach is to ignore everything and sell a new system by default.
The better approach is to inspect.
That means looking behind TVs, checking bulkheads, recording existing equipment, understanding cable runs, testing what still works and deciding what can sensibly remain part of the system.
This is one of the reasons DG Technologies often says the value is in the decisions, not only the equipment list.

The sixth lesson: cable routes matter years later
Years after a project is finished, a support call may begin with something simple:
The TV does not work.
The Wi-Fi has dropped.
The lighting is not responding.
The camera is offline.
The source is not showing.
Behind that simple complaint may be a cable fault, a hidden route, a pipe that does not run where people thought it ran, an inaccessible draw box, a damaged cable, a missing label or an old decision nobody documented.
That is why DG Technologies cares about routes, labels, draw wires, conduit sizes and service access.
A cable is not only useful on installation day.
It is useful for the life of the building, but only if someone can find it, test it, replace it and understand why it was installed.
The seventh lesson: AV, electrical and control are one client experience
Clients do not separate trades in their mind.
They do not think, “The electrician did his part correctly, but the AV integrator inherited a bad route.”
They think, “The system does not work.”
That is why serious residential technology needs one joined-up conversation.
The lighting control, Wi-Fi, CCTV, audio, TV distribution, cinema room, access control, intercom, inverter-backed power, rack ventilation and remote support all meet somewhere. If those systems are designed in separate silos, the client eventually pays for the gaps.
When DG Technologies works with builders, architects, electricians and interior designers, the goal is not to take over their work.
The goal is to protect the finished home.
The scale of work becomes part of the standard
The scale of the work matters because repeated projects create pattern recognition.
After enough homes, you start recognising which TV routes will be awkward later.
After enough lighting panels, you start knowing which loads should not be dimmed.
After enough racks, you start seeing ventilation problems before the equipment arrives.
After enough commercial floors, you stop trusting memory and start insisting on tracking.
After enough rescue jobs, you learn that the missing label can cost more time than the expensive processor.
After enough joint projects with good electrical teams, you learn that the best technology outcomes are rarely created by one trade working alone.
That experience is hard to show in a single project photo.
But it affects every recommendation.
What this means for architects, builders and homeowners

Not because every item must be bought immediately.
Because the building needs to allow for the system properly.
The right early questions are:
- Where will the rack or head-end be?
- Which rooms need TV, audio, Wi-Fi, CCTV or control?
- Which lighting circuits need automation?
- Which areas need future provision only?
- Which conduits must go directly to the rack?
- Which ceilings or speaker holes can provide future access?
- Which DBs need to coordinate with automation?
- Which outdoor or gate routes need surge, weather and access planning?
- Which existing equipment should be reused?
- Which decisions must be documented before finishes close?
Those are not small details.
They are the details that make the home feel effortless later.
