It is easy to focus on the expensive equipment.

The projector. The amplifier. The Crestron processor. The speakers. The cameras. The network switches. The touchscreens. The NVR. The rack.

But in day-to-day support, small consumables can stop a premium AV system just as effectively as a failed major component.

A remote battery dies.

An IR emitter moves.

A patch lead fails.

A small power supply gives up.

A UPS battery no longer holds charge.

A connector becomes unreliable.

To the client, the room is not working.

The fact that the failed item is small does not make the frustration smaller.

Remote batteries are basic, but still important

Remote controls are often the final link between the user and the system.

If the batteries are weak, the client may experience delayed commands, missed button presses, inconsistent source control or a room that feels unreliable.

In a simple lounge, that may be a minor inconvenience. In a large home with cinema rooms, guest rooms, outdoor TVs and shared source equipment, a weak remote can create unnecessary support calls.

Remote batteries should be part of normal maintenance, especially where rooms are used by guests or staff who may not report early symptoms clearly.

This ties into source labels and remote-control handover. A remote should be labelled, room-specific where needed, tested and kept ready.

UPS batteries age quietly

A UPS can look fine until the power fails.

Then the truth appears.

If the battery is old, overloaded or not tested, it may shut down quickly or fail to protect the equipment that depends on it. In South Africa, where power events are part of normal planning, UPS health matters.

This is even more important for equipment that supports remote access, CCTV recording, network stability or control processors.

Small power supplies can create strange symptoms

Many AV and smart-home devices rely on external power supplies.

When those power supplies begin to fail, the symptoms can be misleading. A device may reboot randomly, drop off the network, behave slowly, fail after a power event or work only sometimes.

The first assumption may be that the main device is faulty.

Sometimes it is.

But a weak power supply can create the same kind of frustration at a much lower cost.

Good fault finding checks the basics before replacing expensive equipment.

That is part of engineering judgement.

Patch leads and connectors matter

A premium rack can still be let down by poor patch leads.

Network patch cables, HDMI leads, audio jumpers, keystones, adaptors and terminations all sit in the signal path. If they are poor quality, damaged, too tight, badly routed or under strain, the system can become intermittent.

Intermittent faults are often the worst faults.

They may not appear when the technician is watching. They may happen only when a device warms up, when a cable is moved slightly, when the rack door closes, or after a power cycle.

This is why neat rack work is not cosmetic. Cable length, strain relief, labelling and access all affect future reliability.

IR emitters are small but critical

In many AV systems, especially those involving DSTV or legacy equipment, IR emitters still control important devices.

If one falls off, shifts position or is unplugged, the picture may still appear while control fails. That can make the fault feel more complicated than it is.

This is why IR emitters should be installed carefully, labelled where needed and considered during maintenance. They may be small, but they sit between the user’s command and the device’s response.

Maintenance should include the small things

A good maintenance visit is not only about checking the expensive hardware.

It should also ask:

  • Are remote batteries healthy?
  • Are UPS batteries due for replacement?
  • Are small power supplies stable?
  • Are patch leads and connectors under strain?
  • Are IR emitters still secured?
  • Are labels still readable?
  • Are spare consumables available where needed?

These checks are not glamorous.

They are practical.

The best AV systems are not protected only by premium hardware. They are protected by attention to the small parts that keep the experience working every day.
