Infrared control sounds old-fashioned.

In some systems, it is.

But in real South African AV installations, IR still matters. DSTV decoders, certain TVs, amplifiers, media players, older devices and guest-room systems may still depend on infrared commands. Even in a modern Crestron environment, a reliable IR path can be the difference between a room that feels simple and a room that creates support calls.

The mistake is not using IR.

The mistake is treating it casually.

Many homes still have real-world source equipment

Premium homes do not always run only on the newest app-based devices.

They often include DSTV, streaming boxes, Blu-ray players, matrix systems, older amplifiers, guest-room TVs, outdoor TVs, media rooms and legacy equipment that still does a useful job.

Some of those devices are controlled by IP. Some are controlled by serial. Some are controlled by CEC. Some still need IR.

That is not a problem if it is planned properly.

It becomes a problem when the IR emitter is stuck onto the wrong place, falls off, gets moved during cleaning, is hidden behind equipment, or is not documented.

The symptom to the homeowner is simple: the picture is there, but the channel will not change. Or the source turns on, but not off. Or one room controls the wrong decoder.

The cause is often small and physical.

IR emitters need proper placement

An IR emitter is not decorative.

It must sit where the device can receive the command. If it is slightly off, unreliable or loose, the room may work during handover and fail later.

Good IR planning considers:

  • where the IR receiver sits on the device,
  • whether the emitter can be secured cleanly,
  • whether the cable is protected,
  • whether the rack door or cabinet affects signal,
  • whether the device may be replaced later,
  • and whether the emitter is labelled.

That last point matters.

If a rack has several decoders and several emitters, the next technician should not have to guess which emitter controls which device. This links directly to source labels and remote-control handover.

Guest rooms often need familiar control

Owner areas and guest areas may need different interfaces.

A homeowner may enjoy a custom Crestron interface with room control, music, lighting and source selection. A guest may simply expect a familiar remote to change channels.

That is not a failure of automation. It is good user design.

In some guest rooms, the right answer is to keep television control familiar while the underlying system remains neatly integrated. IR repeaters, room-specific remotes or carefully planned control paths can make the room feel normal to a visitor.

The point is not to force every user into the same interface.

The point is to make each space easy for the person using it.

This is one reason home automation design should consider personality, habits and room use, not only hardware.

IR problems can look like bigger faults

When IR control fails, clients may assume the decoder, TV, matrix, amplifier or control system is faulty.

Sometimes that is true.

Often, the fault is much simpler:

  • the emitter moved,
  • the decoder changed position,
  • the wrong remote is being used,
  • a cabinet door blocks signal,
  • a device was replaced without reprogramming,
  • or the room is trying to control the wrong source.

This is why AV fault diagnosis often starts with photos or short videos. Seeing the device, rack, remote and screen can quickly separate a signal-path fault from a control-path fault.

Modern control does not remove the need for practical details

A premium AV system should feel clean.

The user should not care whether a command is IP, serial, relay, IR, HDMI-CEC or something else. They should press the button and get the desired result.

But the installer must care.

The control method affects reliability, supportability, replacement planning and handover. IR may not be glamorous, but it remains part of the real control toolkit in many homes.

Good engineering is not pretending old methods no longer exist.

Good engineering is choosing the correct method for the device, documenting it, securing it properly and making sure the user never has to think about it.
