A draw box that cannot be reached is almost the same as no draw box at all.
During construction, draw points can look like a small electrical detail. The conduit is in the wall or ceiling, the cable route exists, and everyone moves on.
Years later, the problem appears.
A cable needs to be replaced. A TV route needs an upgrade. An access point needs a new cable. A camera route needs to be tested. A speaker cable needs to be traced. The technician asks where the draw box is.
Then someone discovers it is above a sealed ceiling, behind fixed joinery, plastered over, hidden behind a bulkhead or blocked by another trade.
The route exists, but it cannot be serviced.
Draw boxes are part of future access
Conduit is not only for the first cable pull.
It is also for replacement, testing, upgrades and fault finding. That only works if the draw points remain accessible.
In AV and smart-home work, cable requirements change over time. A TV may need a new cable standard. A camera may be upgraded. A Wi-Fi access point may move. A speaker route may need testing. Fibre equipment may change. A future owner may use a room differently.
The draw box gives the technician a place to work from.
If it disappears behind finishes, the route becomes far less useful.
More bends mean more access points
A straight conduit route is easier to pull through.
A route with several bends is not.
Once a route has too many bends, a draw point becomes important. The exact design depends on the site, but the principle is simple: cable pulls need realistic access.
This is especially important for:
- TV routes
- Projector routes
- Wi-Fi access point routes
- CCTV routes
- Gate and intercom routes
- Speaker routes
- Fibre and network routes
The longer and more complex the route, the more seriously access must be treated.

“Accessible” means accessible after the finish
During first fix, everything feels accessible.
The ceilings are open. Ladders are on site. The builder knows where the route is. The electrician remembers the boxes. The AV team can still see the paths.
That is not the real test.
The real test is after:
- ceilings are closed,
- bulkheads are complete,
- cabinetry is installed,
- stonework is finished,
- paint is done,
- furniture is in place,
- and the client is living in the home.
If the draw box cannot be reached then, it was not truly accessible.
Sometimes the best access point is through a planned speaker opening, removable panel, cupboard access hatch or serviceable ceiling area. The solution can be discreet. It simply needs to exist.
Hidden draw boxes create expensive work
When a draw point is inaccessible, the options become worse.
The technician may need to fish a difficult route, open ceilings, cut access panels, remove joinery, abandon the route, run an external cable or design a workaround.
None of those are ideal in a premium home.
The client may see the cost as an AV problem, but the real issue started during construction coordination.

Draw wire still matters
An accessible draw box helps, but the route also needs draw wire.
No draw wire means wasted time and uncertainty. A conduit may exist, but if the cable cannot be pulled cleanly, the installation becomes slower and more frustrating.
For professional first-fix work, draw wire should be provided and left in a way that future technicians can use. It should not be cut short, buried, lost or blocked.
Small first-fix details like this protect the entire project.
The best conduit plan thinks years ahead
Good conduit planning is not only about getting through handover.
It is about making the home serviceable.
That means sensible conduit sizes, realistic bend counts, accessible draw boxes, draw wire, route documentation and a head-end plan that makes sense.
The homeowner may never think about any of this.
That is fine.
But the day a cable needs to be replaced, these hidden decisions become very visible.
For premium homes, the goal is simple: keep the beautiful finishes beautiful by planning the boring access details early.
