The non-negotiable is access.
If the access point fails, needs testing, needs replacement or needs cabling checked, someone must be able to reach it without damaging the home.
Interior designers should coordinate:
- access point locations;
- ceiling depth;
- speaker openings that can double as access;
- cupboard placement;
- nearby power or PoE route requirements;
- conflicts with lighting, AC grilles and ceiling details.
The goal is not to display the access point. The goal is to keep Wi-Fi reliable and supportable.

Speaker positions affect ceilings and furniture
Speakers are part of the room, even when they are in the ceiling.
Their positions affect:
- downlight layout;
- air-conditioning grilles;
- bulkheads;
- ceiling beams;
- curtain pockets;
- furniture layout;
- listening position;
- service access.
If speakers are placed only after the reflected ceiling plan is final, the result can be awkward. A speaker may land too close to a downlight, too close to a wall, too far from the listening area or in a position that makes the ceiling look unbalanced.
For casual multi-room audio, the speaker layout must suit how the room is used. For cinema rooms, the speaker positions become even more important.

TV walls need AV input before joinery is manufactured
A TV wall is one of the easiest places for design and technology to clash.
The wall may look perfect on a drawing, but the AV team still needs to know:
- screen size;
- screen height;
- bracket type;
- conduit route;
- HDMI or fibre HDMI requirement;
- data route;
- source equipment location;
- cabinet ventilation;
- speaker or soundbar position;
- future service access.
If the cabinet is already made, the stone is already installed or the wall is already finished, the technology options become narrower.
The best TV wall is designed as one object: screen, cabinet, route, equipment, ventilation and control.

CCTV needs discretion without losing the view
CCTV cameras should not make a premium home feel like a warehouse.
But hiding cameras too aggressively can make them useless.
A camera must still see the useful event: a face, vehicle, gate, driveway, entrance, staff route, delivery point or outdoor area. The interior and architectural design should help the camera sit quietly without destroying its view.
Interior and exterior design decisions can affect:
- camera height;
- soffit depth;
- wall finishes;
- lighting glare;
- landscape growth;
- gate and entrance visibility;
- cable route protection;
- future maintenance access.
The best camera position is rarely chosen from aesthetics alone or cabling convenience alone. It needs both.

Keypads and touchscreens are visible design objects
Keypads and touchscreens are small, but they sit on finished walls.
They should be positioned before wall finishes are final.
Check them against:
- door swings;
- architraves;
- wall panelling;
- wallpaper;
- mirrors;
- bedside furniture;
- artwork;
- joinery;
- other switch plates;
- room entry paths.
A control point should feel intentional. It should not appear as an afterthought squeezed into the only wall space left after everything else is designed.

Racks and cabinets need air, depth and access
Interior design often wants technology hidden.
That is fine.
But hidden equipment still produces heat, needs cable bend space and must be serviceable. A beautiful cabinet with no ventilation can turn into a support problem.
Before joinery is final, confirm:
- cabinet depth;
- rear cable space;
- ventilation or fan extraction;
- shelf strength;
- power access;
- route entry;
- door clearance;
- technician access;
- whether noisy equipment should be moved elsewhere.
The rack or AV cabinet is not just storage. It is the part of the home the client calls about when something stops working.
The interior designer should know what not to cover
Some technology must remain accessible.
That may include:
- draw boxes;
- access panels;
- speaker openings;
- rack backs;
- fibre equipment;
- router or switch locations;
- camera junctions;
- ceiling APs;
- control modules;
- power protection equipment.
Covering these items may make the room look cleaner on day one, but it can make maintenance far more invasive later.
The trick is to hide intelligently, not permanently.
