When a client says the Wi-Fi is bad, the access points are often blamed first.

Sometimes that is correct. Sometimes it is not.

Wi-Fi is a conversation between the network and the device. A phone, tablet, laptop, TV, camera or media player can behave badly even when the network design is sound.

Good fault finding tests both sides.

Device age matters

Older devices may not support newer Wi-Fi standards properly.

They may connect more slowly, roam less intelligently, hold onto a weak access point too long or struggle in busy environments. A modern phone may work perfectly in the same room where an older tablet feels unreliable.

That difference matters.

The system should not be judged from one weak device only.

Roaming is not controlled only by the access point

In multi-access-point homes, devices need to move between access points smoothly enough for the way the home is used.

The network can encourage roaming, but the device still makes decisions. Some devices cling to the first access point they connected to, even when a better one is nearby. This can make a client think a room has poor coverage when the device is simply not roaming cleanly.

Testing should include movement through the property, not only standing in one spot.

Usage patterns reveal different problems

A speed test is useful, but it is not the whole story.

Video calls, streaming, gaming, CCTV viewing, smart home apps, cloud backups and guest devices all behave differently. A network may pass a simple test while still struggling with a specific use case.

The technician needs to know what the client was doing when the problem happened.

Network design still matters

Device testing does not excuse poor network design.

Access point placement, channel planning, cabling, switch performance, router settings and interference all matter. The point is that Wi-Fi support should not stop at replacing hardware blindly.

The fault should be proven before equipment is replaced.
