A network cabinet can look perfect and still be wrong.

The joinery is clean. The doors are flush. The equipment is hidden. The room looks calm. But inside the cabinet, routers, switches, PoE equipment, power supplies and UPS units may be working in a hot, sealed space.

That is not a good long-term plan.

Neat is not the same as ventilated

Interior design often aims to hide technology.

That is understandable. Clients do not want routers and cables becoming the feature of a beautiful room. But hiding equipment must not mean suffocating it.

Network equipment produces heat. PoE switches can produce a lot of heat when powering cameras, access points, intercoms or touchscreens. UPS units also need breathing room.

Heat creates intermittent faults

Overheating does not always cause an immediate failure.

It may create strange, intermittent behaviour: access points dropping, switches restarting, cameras going offline, network speed falling, remote access becoming unreliable or equipment life shortening over time.

Those faults can be hard to trace if the cabinet looks neat from the outside.

Joinery should be coordinated early

The solution is not to make the room ugly.

It is to coordinate the cabinet properly. Vent paths, grille positions, fan options, service clearance, cable bend space and door access should be considered before the joinery is built.

Beautiful cabinetry and reliable technology can work together, but they need to be planned together.

Service access matters too

Airflow is only one part.

A technician may need to replace a switch, trace a patch lead, check a UPS, reset a device, read a label or add a future connection. If the cabinet is too tight, the support visit becomes longer and more invasive than it should be.

Good joinery leaves the equipment maintainable.
