Motion sensor lighting sounds simple.

Walk in, light turns on.

Walk out, light turns off.

In a real premium home, it is rarely that simple.

The sensor has to suit the area. The cable has to reach the right place. The sensor position has to work with the architecture. The lighting circuit has to be controllable. The Crestron system needs to know what the client wants to happen. The logic must make sense during the day, at night, when guests are present, during load shedding recovery and when someone chooses to override the automation manually.

That is why DG Technologies treats motion sensors as design decisions, not only devices.

Sensor position changes the behaviour

A sensor can only respond to what it can detect.

If it is placed in the wrong part of a passage, it may turn the light on too late. If it faces the wrong direction, it may miss the person entering. If it sees through an opening into another area, it may trigger when nobody actually wants that zone active. If it is too exposed, pets, curtains, airflow or outdoor movement may create nuisance behaviour.

That means the final sensor location should be checked against real use.

Where does the person approach from? Where should the light already be on? Should the sensor detect someone at the stair, the handrail, the passage, the entrance, the garage door or the bathroom door? Does the ceiling design allow the correct angle? Will cabinetry or bulkheads block the view later?

Those questions matter more than the product box.

The right sensor is the one the client can live with

On some projects, the technically easiest sensor is not the right sensor.

A client may want a cleaner look. An interior designer may object to a visible fitting. A sensor may need to work with Crestron inputs. A position may change after the client sees the room developing. A different sensor type may be needed because the first idea does not suit the final architecture.

That does not mean the project has failed.

It means the automation is being tuned to the home.

DG Technologies would rather spend the time finding a sensor that works technically and visually than install something that annoys the client every day.

The best automation is not the automation that looks clever in a demonstration.

It is the automation the client stops noticing because it behaves correctly.

Manual override must be part of the logic

Motion lighting should not trap the client inside a rule.

There are times when a person wants the light to stay on. There are times when they want it off. There are times when a scene should override motion logic. There are times when a passage should behave differently at night than during the day. There are times when staff, guests or children will use the area differently from the homeowner.

This is where Crestron becomes powerful.

The sensor is only an input.

The value is in the logic behind it.

DG Technologies can decide how that input behaves in context: which load it controls, what brightness level is used, how long the light stays on, whether the keypad can override it, what happens after a scene is selected, whether a night mode changes the output and whether a fault or power restart should return the area to a sensible state.

Without that thinking, motion lighting becomes irritating.

With the right logic, it feels natural.

Cabling still decides what is possible

Wireless sensors can be useful in some cases, but professional automation should not rely on convenience alone.

Where possible, DG Technologies prefers proper cable routes for critical control points. A cabled sensor is easier to integrate into a stable system, easier to power predictably and easier to support in the long term.

The issue is that sensor positions often become final late in the project.

By then ceilings may be closing. Pipe routes may be fixed. Existing cables may have been reassigned. Access may be limited. If the sensor needs a specific cable type or route, the team needs to know how the pipe runs. If the route is not accessible, what sounded like a small change can become a site problem.

That is why sensor planning belongs in the first-fix conversation.

Not after painting.

Small automation moments reveal the quality of the whole system

A motion-controlled handrail light, passage light or entrance scene may seem minor compared with a full cinema, audio system or lighting-control DB.

But these small moments are often what clients notice most.

They happen every day.

If the light comes on too late, it feels wrong. If it turns off too quickly, it feels cheap. If guests do not understand it, it creates friction. If the client has to fight the automation, the system has failed, even if the hardware is expensive.

That is why DG Technologies pays attention to the details behind simple requests.

The question is not only, “Can we add a motion sensor?”

The better question is:

“What should the home do when it detects motion, and when should it deliberately do nothing?”

That is the difference between a sensor installation and proper home automation.
