Many CCTV installations look fine on day one.
The cameras show live view. The app opens. The recorder is online. The installer leaves. Everyone is happy.
Then, a few months later, the calls start.
“I cannot see the cameras.”
“Playback is not working.”
“One camera is offline.”
“The app is asking for a password.”
“The fibre company changed the router and now nothing works.”
“The NVR is there, but the software cannot connect.”
These problems are common because a CCTV system is not only a set of cameras. It is a chain of cabling, power, network, recorder, storage, app accounts and documentation. If any part of that chain was weak, the fault may only appear later.
DG Technologies sees CCTV installation as a supportable system, not a once-off camera fitment. The system should still make sense when something changes.
The network was not treated as part of CCTV
Modern CCTV depends on the network.
If the installer treated the network as someone else’s problem, the system may become fragile. Cameras need IP addresses. NVRs need stable connectivity. Apps depend on internet access. Remote support depends on known routes. PoE switches need enough power. Routers need sensible configuration.
Common network-related failures include:
- camera IP addresses changing
- duplicate IP conflicts
- router replacements removing reservations
- NVRs moving offline
- remote viewing failing after fibre changes
- poor switch capacity
- weak uplinks between buildings
- no record of which switch feeds which camera

If the network is not designed, the CCTV installation is not finished.
PoE power was undersized or undocumented
Power over Ethernet is brilliant when it is planned properly.
It lets the camera receive data and power from one cable. But the switch still has a power budget. Cameras still draw power. Some cameras draw more power at night when infrared is active. Long routes and poor terminations can also create problems.
If the PoE side is weak, cameras may reboot, drop offline or behave intermittently.
The client may think the camera is faulty. Sometimes it is. But sometimes the issue is a switch, port, injector, cable, connector or power design problem.
A supportable installation should make it clear which switch powers which cameras.
The recorder was not sized or maintained properly
The NVR or DVR is often ignored until playback is needed.
That is a mistake.
Recorder problems can include:
- hard drive failure
- incorrect recording schedule
- wrong date or time
- storage overwritten too quickly
- low retention because settings were too aggressive
- no UPS protection
- poor ventilation
- app or software connection problems
Live view can be working while playback is unreliable. That is why maintenance checks should include recording and playback, not only whether the cameras appear on screen.
If the system is important, the recorder should be installed in a proper cabinet or rack with power protection, ventilation and documentation.
App ownership was not handed over properly
CCTV app setup is one of the most common long-term support issues.
The client changes phone. A staff member leaves. The original installer used their own account. The recorder is bound to an old account. The verification code is unknown. The wrong app is installed. A password has been entered incorrectly too many times.
These issues can make a working CCTV system feel broken.
Professional handover should make app ownership clear:
- who owns the system account
- how users are added or removed
- where recorder details are stored securely
- what happens when a phone is replaced
- who is responsible for remote access support
That does not mean leaving passwords lying around. It means responsible custody and clear process.
Cable routes were never labelled
Unlabelled CCTV cables are manageable when there are four cameras.
They become a problem when there are many cameras, multiple buildings, more than one cabinet, old equipment, new equipment and several contractors who have worked on the site over the years.
When a camera is offline, the technician should be able to identify its cable, switch, port and recorder path without guessing.
If every cable is anonymous, fault finding becomes slower and more expensive.
This is why CCTV cabling, labelling and containment matter as much as the camera model.
The quote was too focused on camera count
A cheap CCTV installation often looks good because it lists many cameras for a low price.
The missing items may only become obvious later:
- no proper conduit
- weak PoE switching
- no UPS planning
- insufficient storage
- no app handover
- no network documentation
- poor camera placement
- recorder installed in a bad location
- no future expansion path
The client did not buy a cheaper version of the same system.
They bought a system with important parts missing.
The site changed
Sometimes the original installation was fine, but the site changed.
A fibre provider replaced the router. A builder moved a cable. A camera was bumped. A tree grew into the view. A staff member changed app settings. A hard drive aged. A switch was unplugged. Load shedding exposed a weak UPS. Coastal weather affected a bracket or housing.
Good CCTV design anticipates change where possible.
It leaves records, labels, access and a sensible support path.
