A CCTV recorder can sit quietly in a cupboard for months.
The lights are on. The cameras appear in the app. Everyone assumes it is recording.
Then an incident happens.
Only then does someone discover that the hard drive has failed, the recording schedule is wrong, the time is incorrect, a camera has been offline for weeks or playback is not available for the period they need.
That is the worst time to check recorder health.
The NVR is the memory of the system
The cameras are the visible part of CCTV.
The recorder is the memory.
If the recorder is not healthy, the system may still look impressive on a screen while quietly failing its main purpose.
For homes, estates and commercial premises, an NVR or DVR should be checked as part of normal CCTV maintenance. That check should not only ask whether live view works.
It should ask whether evidence is being recorded properly.
Hard drives fail
CCTV hard drives work hard.
They may record day and night, across multiple cameras, for years. Eventually, drives can fail or develop errors. Some recorders show warnings. Some users ignore the warnings. Some systems were never configured to notify the right person.
A recorder health check should confirm:
- hard-drive status,
- available recording capacity,
- expected retention period,
- whether drives are designed for surveillance use,
- whether any errors are logged,
- whether the system is overwriting normally.
If the drive has failed, live view may still work.
That is why live view alone is not proof.
Recording schedules can be wrong
Some systems record continuously. Some record on motion. Some use events. Some use different schedules for different cameras.
Any of these can be correct if they match the brief.
They can also be wrong.
A camera may only be recording during the day. Motion detection may be too sensitive or not sensitive enough. A camera may be set to event recording when the client expects continuous recording. A storage-saving setting may reduce retention but miss the context before and after movement.
The installer should explain the recording method.
The client should understand what the system is expected to keep.
Time and date must be correct
Time errors are small until they become serious.
If the recorder time is wrong, searching footage becomes frustrating. If exported footage has the wrong timestamp, it may create confusion during an incident review. If cameras and recorder times differ, a multi-camera sequence becomes harder to follow.
Time should be checked during maintenance.
It should also be checked after power events, router changes or system resets where relevant.
For business CCTV, this matters because footage may be used to understand stock movement, access events, delivery timing or staff incidents.
Offline cameras should not go unnoticed
On a small system, an offline camera may be obvious.
On a large system, it can hide.
If a site has 32, 64 or more cameras, a camera can be offline for some time before anyone notices. The missing view may only become important after an incident.
Recorder health checks should review the camera list and confirm that important views are online:
- gates,
- entrances,
- loading bays,
- dispatch points,
- staff areas,
- yards,
- perimeter views,
- recorder room or rack area where appropriate.
If a camera is offline, the next step is fault finding: camera, PoE, cable, switch port, password, IP address, water ingress or recorder configuration.
Remote access should be tested carefully
Many clients mostly interact with CCTV from a phone.
That means remote access is part of the system.
A health check should confirm that authorised users can still access live view and playback where appropriate. It should also check that old users are removed where necessary and that account ownership is clear.
This is not only convenience.
It is security.
Footage access should be controlled, especially in private homes and commercial sites.
Retention should match the real risk
Retention is not a fixed number that suits every site.
A small home may be comfortable with a shorter period. A commercial site may need longer retention because issues are often discovered late. A holiday home owner may only check an event after returning to the property. A warehouse may need to review dispatch or delivery footage after paperwork catches up.
The recorder health check should compare actual retention with expected retention.
If the system is only keeping a few days and the client expects a few weeks, that needs to be addressed before footage is needed.
This may require larger drives, better compression settings, revised recording schedules or a different recorder design.
A recorder check is not optional maintenance
Recorder health checks are not glamorous.
They do not make the camera system look newer.
They make it trustworthy.
