Intercom and access control should not be left until the gate contractor is already finishing the entrance.

The gate is one of the most important technology points on a property. It may involve vehicles, pedestrians, visitors, deliveries, staff, estate security, cameras, lighting, network equipment, power supplies and emergency release.

If those decisions are not coordinated early, the final entrance can become a collection of separate devices instead of one clear system.

Start with how people enter the property

Before choosing an intercom or reader, the project team should understand how the property will actually be used.

The questions are practical:

  • Who opens the vehicle gate?
  • Who opens the pedestrian gate?
  • Who receives deliveries?
  • Who needs staff access?
  • Does access change by time of day?
  • Does estate security need a separate process?
  • Should the house manager have limited control?
  • What happens when the internet is down?
  • What happens when the power changes over to backup?
  • What happens in an emergency?

Access control is not only about letting people in.

It is about controlling who can open what, when, and how that action is recorded or supported.

Gate routes are cheaper before paving

Gate and entrance cabling is often painful to add later.

Driveways, paving, boundary walls, landscaping, sleeves and garden lighting all occupy the same physical area. If the future cable route is not allowed for early, adding a pedestrian gate reader, camera, intercom, keypad or network point later may require digging through finished work.

On a new build, I like to see proper routes across driveways and gate areas while the site is still open.

Future conduits are not wasted money when the alternative is cutting paving later.

Intercoms need network and power planning

Modern intercoms often depend on the network.

That means they should not be treated as isolated doorbells. They need cable routes, power, network switching, internet stability, app ownership, remote access rules and sometimes integration with the broader automation system.

If an intercom is expected to call mobile phones, release gates, work with CCTV, or trigger events inside a smart home, the network must be planned around that expectation.

The same applies to access readers and controllers.

They need power, data, mounting positions, weather protection, cable protection and service access.

CCTV and access control should be designed together

The person opening the gate often needs to see the gate.

That sounds obvious, but it is missed often enough to matter.

An intercom camera may not show the full context. A CCTV camera can show the vehicle, pedestrian area, delivery bay or gate approach more clearly. Lighting can help or hurt the camera. The camera position can help the house manager make the right decision.

Fail-safe and fail-secure must be discussed

Access control has safety implications.

Some locks are designed to unlock when power fails. Others remain locked. Gates, pedestrian doors, maglocks, strikes and releases all need the correct logic for the situation.

The discussion should include:

  • backup power;
  • manual release;
  • emergency access;
  • staff procedures;
  • who is allowed to override the system;
  • what happens during load shedding;
  • what happens during internet failure.

This is not a cosmetic decision. It affects how people move through the property when something goes wrong.

Names and permissions should be written down

Access systems become messy when nobody owns the user list.

Old staff remain active. Temporary codes never expire. Guest access is shared too widely. App accounts are created under the wrong person. Nobody knows who should approve a new user.

For a premium home, the access-control handover should include a simple owner-approved permission structure.

That may include family, house manager, domestic staff, garden staff, guards, contractors, temporary guests and emergency contacts.

The system should match the way the household is actually managed.

Plan access before the entrance becomes finished architecture

The entrance to a home is both architectural and technical.

It needs to look clean, but it also needs to work every day.

If intercoms, readers, cameras, lighting, gates, pedestrian access, power, network and emergency procedures are planned early, the result is calmer and more reliable.
