Temporary access often becomes permanent by accident.

A contractor needs Wi-Fi for a day. An IT company needs remote access to check a router. A security provider needs CCTV viewing during an investigation. A maintenance team needs gate access during a project.

The access is created for a reason.

Then nobody removes it.

Temporary access should have an end date

The simplest control is an expiry date.

When temporary access is created, the support note should say why it was created and when it should be removed. That may apply to Wi-Fi credentials, CCTV app users, gate permissions, remote-support accounts or temporary codes.

Without an end date, the home slowly collects old access.

Old access creates quiet risk

The risk is not always dramatic.

It may be a contractor who can still connect to a network. A former provider who can still view a camera. A device that was added for testing and never removed. A temporary gate code that becomes shared.

In a private home, especially one with staff, guests and external contractors, those small leftovers matter.

Removal is part of completion

A job is not fully complete until temporary access has been reviewed.

That does not mean every temporary user is removed blindly. Sometimes access must remain for support. But it should be deliberate, approved and documented.

If nobody can explain why an account still exists, it probably deserves review.

Temporary access should be limited

Not every user needs administrator access.

A contractor who only needs internet should not be placed on the same network as control processors and CCTV devices. A viewer who only needs live camera view may not need playback or export rights. A maintenance user may not need full system administration.

Access should match the job.
