Sonos is one of the easiest audio systems for a client to understand.
Open the app, choose a room, choose music and press play.
That simplicity is exactly why it is popular. But in large homes, especially homes with many zones, thick walls, outdoor entertainment areas, guest rooms and multiple access points, Sonos reliability depends heavily on the network underneath it.
When Sonos works well, it feels effortless. When the network is wrong, people often blame the app, the speaker or the internet. The real fault may be switching, wireless design, mixed connection methods, poor access point placement or network loops.
For DG Technologies, a serious Sonos installation is never only an audio installation. It is a network design.
Every zone adds complexity
A small Sonos system may be one soundbar, one portable speaker and one room.
A large home can have:
- A lounge soundbar.
- Bedroom audio.
- Kitchen speakers.
- Veranda speakers.
- Firepit audio.
- Pool or garden audio.
- Portable speakers.
- Dedicated amplifiers for in-ceiling zones.
- Guest rooms.
- Staff or garage areas.
Each Sonos device or amplifier becomes part of the system. As the zone count grows, the network has to support discovery, grouping, streaming, updates and control from multiple phones.
That is why the conversation must start with the network, not only with speaker choice.
Hardwiring is good, but it must be done properly
Hardwiring networked audio equipment is usually a good thing. It removes unnecessary wireless traffic and gives fixed equipment a more stable path back to the rack.
But hardwiring Sonos is not something to do randomly.
UniFi’s own Sonos best-practice guidance warns that Sonos devices can create network loop issues if wired and wireless behaviour is not planned correctly. Their recommendations include keeping wired Sonos devices on the same network or VLAN, avoiding daisy-chaining and managing spanning-tree behaviour properly.
That is not theoretical. In a premium home, one badly behaving networked audio device can create symptoms that look completely unrelated:
- Music skipping.
- Rooms disappearing from the app.
- Slow Wi-Fi.
- Access points dropping.
- Control delays.
- Intermittent streaming faults.

Mixing wired and wireless needs care
The wrong mix of wired and wireless Sonos devices can create instability.
Some installations work better when all fixed Sonos amplifiers are wired. Some work better when certain devices remain purely wireless. Legacy Sonos behaviour, portable devices, access point channels and switch configuration all matter.
The important point is not that there is one universal rule for every home.
The point is that someone has to make the decision deliberately.
Large homes should not be left with a collection of devices connected however they happened to connect on installation day.
The Wi-Fi must cover where people actually use the system
Multiroom audio is controlled by people, not by the rack.
If the client is standing near the braai, by the pool, in the garden or on the veranda, the phone must still have strong and stable Wi-Fi. If the phone cannot communicate reliably with the network, the audio system will feel unreliable even if the speaker wiring is perfect.
This is why Wi-Fi planning and multiroom audio should be designed together.
In a large home, access points should be planned before ceilings are closed. Outdoor areas may need dedicated coverage. Thick walls, concrete slabs, steel, glass and stone finishes can all affect signal. Cheap extenders are rarely the answer in this environment.
A good Sonos system should survive real use
The real test is not whether music plays during handover.
The real test is whether it works during a function.
People group rooms together. Guests join the Wi-Fi. Phones move around the property. Someone changes music from the veranda. Another person adjusts volume from the kitchen. The internet line may be under load. The system has to remain stable under normal life, not just in a quiet test.

The network is the part that decides whether they trust it.
Plan the network before blaming the audio
If a Sonos system in a large Durban or KZN home keeps dropping, skipping or disappearing, the first question should not be, “Is Sonos bad?”
The better questions are:
- Is the Wi-Fi properly designed?
- Are the fixed devices wired correctly?
- Are switch settings appropriate?
- Are there network loops?
- Are all zones on the correct network?
- Are access points positioned for real use?
- Is the rack documented and supportable?
When those answers are clear, Sonos can be an excellent multiroom audio platform.
Without those answers, even good equipment can feel frustrating.
That is the lesson: premium audio is only as reliable as the network underneath it.
