Many CCTV cameras look good during the day.
Night is where the truth appears.
A camera that seems clear in daylight can become almost useless after dark. Faces blur. Number plates glow white. Headlights wash out the image. Infrared reflects off walls, gutters or spider webs. The camera sees movement, but not enough detail to identify what happened.
This is one of the reasons we are careful about CCTV design. A security system should not only look impressive on a phone at 2pm. It must still be useful at night, when many incidents actually happen.

Megapixels are not the whole answer
Camera marketing often focuses on resolution.
2MP. 4MP. 8MP. 4K.
Resolution matters, but it does not solve every night-time problem. A high-resolution camera with poor low-light performance, bad placement or the wrong lens can still produce footage that is not useful.
At night, the camera needs enough light, the right exposure, the correct angle and a scene that does not confuse the image processing.
A cheaper camera may technically have a high megapixel number, but the sensor, lens and low-light handling may not be strong enough for the environment.
Infrared can help, but it can also cause problems
Many CCTV cameras use infrared at night.
That can be useful, but infrared is not magic. It bounces. It reflects. It attracts insects. It can overexpose nearby objects and leave distant areas dark.
Common infrared problems include:
- a wall too close to the camera reflecting light back
- a gutter or eave glowing in the image
- spider webs lighting up in front of the lens
- dust or moisture causing haze
- faces becoming too bright close to the camera
- the background remaining too dark
Sometimes moving the camera slightly solves the issue. Sometimes an external light is needed. Sometimes a different camera type is a better answer.
This is why camera placement matters as much as the camera itself.
Headlights and number plates are difficult
Driveway cameras often struggle at night because vehicle headlights point directly into the camera.
A camera may show that a vehicle arrived, but the plate may be unreadable. The headlights may overpower the image. The plate may reflect too much light. The angle may be too wide. The vehicle may pass too quickly.
If number plate capture is important, the system should be designed for that purpose. A general driveway camera is not automatically a number-plate camera.
For most homes, the goal may be awareness and gate visibility. For some commercial sites or estates, identification may be more important. The installer should be honest about what each camera is expected to achieve.
Wide-angle cameras are not always better
A wide-angle camera shows more of the scene.
That can be helpful, but it also spreads detail over a wider area. A person at the edge of the image may be too small to identify. A driveway may look fully covered, but the useful detail may be weak.
This is where cheaper CCTV packages can mislead clients. A wide view can look impressive because you see a lot on screen. But when you zoom in after an incident, there may not be enough detail.
Professional CCTV design balances wide overview cameras with tighter identification views where needed.
Camera height changes the result
Mounting cameras too high is a common mistake.
High cameras are harder to reach and may feel safer from tampering, but they can also produce poor identification footage. Looking down from a high angle may show movement without showing faces clearly.
For some areas, higher mounting makes sense. For entrances, pedestrian routes and gates, the height and angle should be chosen around the evidence needed.
The question is not only “can the camera see the area?”
The question is “can the camera see the detail that will matter later?”
Lighting should be part of CCTV planning
Sometimes the best improvement to night-time CCTV is not a more expensive camera.
It is better lighting.
A small amount of correctly placed light can improve camera performance dramatically. Lighting should avoid shining directly into the lens, creating harsh shadows or making the property uncomfortable to live with.
For premium homes, lighting also needs to respect the architecture. The aim is not to floodlight the property like an industrial yard. The aim is to give the cameras enough useful light while keeping the home attractive and private.
This is where CCTV, lighting control and property design start to overlap.
Cheap cameras can still be useful in the right place
Not every camera needs to be expensive.
Tapo-style cameras, for example, can be very useful for simple home monitoring when the Wi-Fi is strong and the expectation is realistic. They are easy to use, quick to deploy and good value for the right purpose.
But a cheap camera should not be sold as the answer to every security problem.
For permanent perimeter CCTV, commercial sites, estate homes and important night-time views, Hikvision, Dahua or other professional wired systems may be more appropriate depending on the brief.
The honest answer depends on the site.
Test the system at night
A CCTV installation should not only be checked during the day.
Night testing matters.
The installer should look at real night-time views, check glare, check infrared reflection, check important routes and confirm whether the footage meets the client’s expectation.
If a camera is meant to show a gate at night, test the gate at night. If vehicles are important, test with headlights. If a pathway matters, check whether a person is identifiable.
For Durban and KZN homes and businesses, a good CCTV system is not the one with the most impressive box label. It is the one that still gives useful footage when conditions are difficult.
