A home automation cost calculator can be useful for a rough starting point, but it can also send a project in the wrong direction.
The reason is simple: home automation cost is not only based on the number of rooms or the square meterage of the house. It is based on what each room needs to do, what infrastructure already exists, how the home is built, which systems must integrate, and how reliable the final result needs to be.
Two homes can be the same size and require completely different budgets.
Why a home automation cost calculator is only a guide
An online calculator normally asks basic questions:
- number of rooms,
- number of lights,
- number of TVs,
- number of audio zones,
- number of cameras,
- approximate house size.
Those questions help, but they do not tell the whole story.
They do not reveal whether the conduit is usable, whether the rack has space, whether the router is under control, whether the Wi-Fi design is correct, whether the lighting circuits are compatible, whether ceilings are already closed, whether equipment needs to be hidden, or whether an existing system can be reused.
That is where real quotation work begins.
Cost of home automation in South Africa: what changes the price?
In South Africa, the cost of home automation is affected by:
- load shedding and power protection,
- concrete and brick construction,
- long cable routes,
- existing conduit quality,
- outdoor entertainment areas,
- coastal corrosion,
- estate access rules,
- inverter and solar behaviour,
- remote support requirements,
- the availability of local product support.
Those factors are often more important than the simple room count.
For example, adding a TV point in a new build with correct conduit is very different from trying to retrofit a clean TV solution after stonework, ceilings and cabinetry are complete.
Home automation price list vs design decision
A price list can show what equipment costs.
It cannot show whether that equipment is the right decision.

Home automation cost per square metre sounds neat, but it is often misleading.
A compact entertainment-focused home may need more technology than a much larger home with simple rooms. A 1000 square metre house with many guest suites, staff areas, outdoor zones, gates, CCTV, audio, lighting and remote support is not priced like a simple open-plan home of similar size.
The better method is room-by-room scope.
For each space, decide:
- lighting control,
- TV or projector,
- audio,
- Wi-Fi,
- CCTV relevance,
- access control relevance,
- user type,
- future provision,
- service access.
That gives a more honest estimate.
When a rough estimate is still useful
Rough estimates are useful early in a project.
They help the client understand whether the conversation is a small upgrade, a mid-level system or a full integrated home. But they should be treated as planning numbers until the site, drawings or existing installation have been reviewed.
