A UPS is only as useful as the battery inside it.
The label on the front may still look professional. The lights may still be on. The rack may appear protected. But if the battery has aged badly, the UPS may not support the load when it is needed.
That is why UPS batteries need replacement dates, not hope.
Batteries age quietly
UPS batteries do not usually announce their decline politely.
Heat, charging cycles, load shedding, inverter behaviour, dust, poor ventilation and age all affect battery life. In a rack room or cupboard, the environment may be warmer than expected.
A battery can look fine until the first real power event exposes it.
By then, the rack may already have dropped.
The protected load matters
In a serious home or commercial system, a UPS may support more than one device.
It may be carrying the router, network switches, PoE cameras, access points, automation processor, CCTV recorder, intercom equipment and remote-support pathway.
If the UPS fails, the problem is not just one device switching off.
The entire support path may disappear.
That can make diagnosis harder, especially when the client is remote or the property is occupied by staff.
Runtime expectations should be realistic
A UPS is not a generator.
Its job may be to bridge short interruptions, protect sensitive electronics, allow clean shutdown or keep essential control equipment alive through a transition.
If the load has grown over time, the original runtime may no longer be realistic. Adding cameras, access points, switches or processors changes the calculation.
That is why UPS capacity should be reviewed when the system changes.
Replacement dates make maintenance easier
A written replacement date avoids guesswork.
It tells the support team when the battery was installed, when it should be tested and when it should be replaced. It also helps the client understand that UPS maintenance is normal, not a surprise.
This is especially important in South Africa, where power instability can make UPS equipment work harder than it would in a cleaner electrical environment.
