A network is often limited by the first device in the chain.
In many homes, the fibre ONT is treated as the small box from the internet provider. It gets placed wherever the installer found fibre access, plugged into whatever socket was nearby, and forgotten.
That works until the rest of the home depends on it.
The ONT is part of the technology system
The ONT may not belong to the smart-home installer, but it affects the smart home.
If the ONT loses power, the router may still be alive but have no internet. The switches may still run, the access points may still broadcast, and the Crestron processor may still be online locally, but remote support, cloud services, streaming, camera viewing and app access may fail.
From the client’s point of view, the system is broken.
Backup power must follow the dependency chain
It is common to protect the router and switch with UPS power while the ONT sits on a normal wall plug.
That is not a complete network power strategy.
The protected path should consider the ONT, router, core switch, PoE switches, access points, CCTV recorder, automation processor and any critical remote-access equipment. If one important link is left outside the protected path, the whole chain may be weaker than expected.
Location affects serviceability
The ONT should not be hidden somewhere nobody can reach.
If the fibre provider needs to test it, reset it or replace it, access should be possible without disturbing joinery, ceilings or private rooms unnecessarily. The location should also be documented so future support does not begin with a search.
In larger homes, that simple detail can save time.
Restart order matters
After load shedding, devices may recover in different orders.
If the ONT, router and switches are not powered sensibly, the network may come back in a confused state. Some devices may reconnect, others may not, and the client may see intermittent faults that are hard to explain.
Keeping the network chain on a considered power path reduces that risk.
