Site photos are often treated as casual progress updates.

For AV, CCTV and smart home work, they are more important than that. They become evidence of what was installed, where it was installed, what was accessible at the time, and what changed later.

On a busy construction site, memory is not enough.

Photos protect hidden work

Most low-voltage work disappears.

Cables go into ceilings, walls, conduits, cupboards, cabinets and roof spaces. Once finishes are complete, nobody can see the route. If there is no photographic record, future fault finding depends on guesswork.

A simple photo before the ceiling closes can show where the conduit ran, where a draw box was placed, where spare cable was left, or where another trade still needed to finish.

That photo may save hours years later.

Photos help prove damage

Construction sites change quickly.

A cable can be cut, crushed, pulled out, painted over, plastered in or moved by another trade. If there is no record of the original work, responsibility becomes difficult to establish.

Photos help show what was complete before the damage happened.

They are not about blaming people. They are about keeping the project factual.

Photos make remote support faster

When a client or house manager sends a photo of a rack, switch, power supply or screen, a technician can often spot useful details immediately.

Is the device powered? Is a patch lead loose? Is a cabinet too hot? Is the wrong input selected? Is a cable labelled? Is the access point installed where it was planned?

Good photos can reduce unnecessary site visits and help the technician arrive better prepared when a visit is needed.

Photos should be organised

Random photos are better than nothing, but organised photos are far more useful.

They should be grouped by room, system, date or project stage where possible. A handover folder with useful images can become part of the technical memory of the home or building.

The goal is not to store thousands of meaningless images.

The goal is to keep the ones that explain the system.
