Ceiling closure is a milestone on a building site.

For the technology contractor, it is also a warning line.

Once ceilings close, access changes. Cable routes disappear behind plasterboard, bulkheads, insulation and paint. A fault that could have been found quickly while everything was open can become a slow investigation later.

That is why low-voltage cables should be checked before ceilings close.

Continuity testing is basic discipline

A cable may look fine from the floor.

That does not mean it is fine.

It may have been pinched, cut, stretched, kinked, joined badly, pulled through a sharp bend or damaged by another trade. It may also have been labelled incorrectly or routed to the wrong place.

A continuity test does not prove the entire system is finished.

It proves that the basic path still exists.

That matters before the route disappears.

The test protects the client

If a speaker cable, camera cable, access point cable or TV cable is faulty while the ceiling is open, correction is usually straightforward.

If the same fault is discovered after painting and joinery, the conversation becomes harder.

Who pays for opening the ceiling?

Who repairs the finish?

Who delays handover?

The client should not be caught in the middle of that argument because nobody tested early.

Testing also catches wrong destinations

Low-voltage projects can have many similar cables.

Camera routes, speaker routes, access point routes, TV routes, fibre routes, touch panel routes and network points can all meet at the same head end. If labels are unclear or cables are crossed, the mistake may only show up during commissioning.

That is too late.

Before ceilings close, it is easier to trace and correct.

Access points and speakers need special attention

Ceiling devices often create a false sense of simplicity.

“The cable is in the ceiling” sounds good until the team discovers it is not near the speaker cut-out, not near the access hatch or not serviceable after the ceiling is complete.

Testing should be paired with physical position checking.

Can the device be installed where intended?

Can it be reached later?

Can the cable be replaced if something fails?

A test record is better than memory
