SIM-card routers are useful tools.

They help on construction sites, temporary cameras, remote gates, mobile installations and places where fixed fibre is not available yet. Used correctly, they can solve a real problem.

But for a serious CCTV site, a SIM router should be treated as a risk item, not as a premium backbone.

This matters because the cameras often get blamed when the cellular link is the actual weak point.

CCTV needs more than “internet”

A CCTV system does not use internet in the same casual way as a laptop checking email.

For a client, the remote connection may be needed for:

  • live viewing,
  • incident checks,
  • remote support,
  • event alerts,
  • system health checks,
  • playback from off site,
  • access by authorised managers or security staff.

If the router drops, throttles, reconnects slowly after a power event or sits in a weak signal area, the CCTV system feels unreliable even if local recording continues.

The problem is not always the NVR.

The problem may be the link out of the site.

Signal bars do not tell the whole story

A cellular router can show signal and still perform poorly.

Signal bars do not explain latency, packet loss, tower congestion, upload stability, carrier-grade NAT, throttling or intermittent reconnection after load shedding. They also do not tell you whether the router is placed in the correct location.

A router hidden in a guard room, steel cabinet, office cupboard or plant area may connect, but not cleanly enough for reliable CCTV access.

For browsing, that might be acceptable.

For a security system, it is not the standard we want.

Cellular networks are shared

Cellular towers are shared by many users.

A site can work well during testing and become unreliable when the tower is busy. The client may experience poor remote viewing in the evening or during local network congestion. The cameras are still installed correctly, but the link cannot deliver the expected experience.

That unpredictability is why fixed fibre or a properly engineered business connection is normally preferable for important CCTV sites.

Where cellular is the only option, it must be designed deliberately.

Power recovery is a hidden problem

South African power conditions make this more important.

After load shedding, an inverter transition or a power dip, the cameras, switch, recorder and router all need to recover properly. It is common to find that the recorder came back, but the router did not reconnect properly. Or the router came back before the network was ready. Or the CCTV system is powered, but the internet equipment is on a different plug and has gone down.

The client only discovers the issue when they open the app from another location.

If the site relies on remote access, the router must be part of the backup-power design.

Data and upload speed matter

CCTV is upload-heavy when viewed remotely.

Many people check download speed and ignore upload speed. For remote viewing, upload is often the important side. Multiple high-resolution cameras, several users and playback over the app can quickly expose a weak connection.

Data caps also matter. If a site streams often or multiple users check cameras regularly, a cellular account can be depleted or throttled. The system then appears unreliable even though the recorder and cameras are doing their job.

If a SIM router must be used

Sometimes a SIM router is still the right practical option.

In that case, it should be installed like part of the CCTV system:

  • use a quality LTE or 5G router,
  • test upload performance,
  • check signal quality, not only signal bars,
  • use external antennas where needed,
  • place the router where it can work reliably,
  • power it from the correct backup circuit,
  • document the data plan and remote-access method,
  • consider dual-SIM or failover for important sites,
  • test remote viewing from outside the local network.

The difference is intent.

A temporary internet workaround is one thing. A relied-upon security link is another.

Local recording must remain independent

Even with good internet, a CCTV system should continue recording locally when the internet fails.

That protects evidence.

But the client may still need remote viewing, especially for holiday homes, estates, businesses and sites where the owner is not present every day. If remote access is important, the router and connection need professional thought.

DG Technologies does not reject SIM routers. We reject pretending they are the same as a properly planned network connection.

For serious CCTV sites in KZN, the router, power, signal, data plan and remote-access path are part of the design. The best camera in the world can still feel unreliable if the connection behind it is unstable.

For a temporary site, a SIM router can be useful.

For a serious site, it must be engineered.
