The best CCTV camera is not always the most expensive camera on the shelf.

It is the camera that suits the job.

That sounds simple, but it is where many CCTV quotations go wrong. A small home, a large estate, a warehouse, a cold store, a gatehouse and a temporary viewing point do not all need the same camera strategy.

Brand matters, but the site matters more

Hikvision and Dahua are strong professional CCTV platforms. They scale well, work with proper recorders, support larger storage requirements and suit serious installations where reliability, multi-camera management and long-term support matter.

Tapo can also be the right answer in the correct situation. For a smaller area with good Wi-Fi, a cost-sensitive brief or a quick installation requirement, Tapo’s app experience and wire-free options can be practical.

The question is not which brand is “best” in isolation.

The question is what the site needs.

Risk changes the answer

A camera watching a driveway is not doing the same job as a camera watching a loading bay, factory gate, staff entrance or high-value storage area.

Higher-risk areas may need better night performance, stronger mounting, more reliable recording, proper network cabling, longer retention, user access control and clear footage export procedures.

That pushes the design toward a more professional platform.

Wi-Fi changes the answer

Wire-free cameras can be useful, but only where the Wi-Fi is strong and the client understands the limits.

In a large property, poor Wi-Fi can turn a good camera into a frustrating camera. The camera may be fine. The network path may not be.

For serious CCTV, cable is still often the better foundation.

Storage changes the answer

If the client needs weeks of reliable footage, multiple cameras and easy retrieval after an incident, the recorder and storage design become important.

Camera choice cannot be separated from NVR capacity, bit rate, recording schedule and backup expectations.

Support changes the answer
