Motion sensors sound simple.
Someone walks in. The light comes on.
In a real smart home, the decision is more careful than that. The sensor has to suit the room, the mounting position, the finish, the family, the control system and the way the space is actually used.
Detection is only one part of the decision.
The wrong sensor can make a good system annoying
A motion sensor that is too sensitive can turn lights on when nobody wants them.
A sensor that is not sensitive enough can leave someone waving their arms in a passage. A poorly positioned sensor can miss the entrance path. A visible sensor in the wrong place can upset the interior design. A sensor with the wrong output may not integrate cleanly with the control system.
The client does not judge the technical explanation.
They judge whether the room behaves properly.
Sensor position matters as much as sensor type
The same sensor can behave differently depending on where it is installed.
Ceiling height, doorway position, furniture, glass, air-conditioning, curtains, staircases and open-plan layouts all affect the result. A sensor in a neat-looking location may not be the best technical location.
This is why DG Technologies prefers to discuss sensor positions before ceilings and finishes are complete.
Once the ceiling is closed, the options become narrower.
Some rooms should not be automated aggressively
Not every room needs motion-based control.
Passages, garages, utility areas, pantries and guest bathrooms can often benefit from simple sensor logic. Bedrooms, lounges, cinema rooms and dining areas need more care. In those rooms, automatic lighting can become intrusive if the logic is not considered.
Good automation is not about automating everything.
It is about automating the moments that genuinely improve daily life.
The control logic matters
A sensor is only an input.
The real intelligence sits in the logic behind it.
Should the light come on only at night? Should it use a low-level scene after bedtime? Should it ignore motion when a cinema scene is active? Should it time out quickly in a passage but slowly in a garage? Should the client be able to override it from a keypad?
These decisions define whether the system feels premium or irritating.
Interior design should be respected
Sensors are visible objects.
In high-end homes, that matters. The sensor finish, shape, ceiling position and surrounding details should be coordinated with the interior designer where possible. Sometimes the best solution is a more discreet sensor. Sometimes the better decision is to move the automation logic elsewhere.
The technical team should not treat ceilings as empty space.
They are part of the finished architecture.
