A camera pole looks simple from a distance.

It is not.

A proper camera pole needs a stable foundation, sensible height, a safe cable route, power or PoE planning, surge protection, correct camera positioning and future maintenance access. If those items are ignored, the pole may become a weak point in the entire CCTV system.

Stability affects the image

Cameras do not like movement.

A pole that shakes in wind can create blurred footage, false motion events and poor night performance. The foundation, pole size and mounting method should suit the camera load and location.

This matters even more for longer views, perimeter detection and zoomed angles.

Height is a security decision

Mounting a camera higher is not automatically better.

Height can protect the camera from tampering and improve overview, but it can also reduce facial detail and make maintenance harder. A perimeter design may need different heights for overview, identification and detection.

The pole position should match the purpose of the camera.

Surge risk must be considered

Outdoor poles can be exposed.

Long cable runs, open ground, nearby electrical infrastructure and storms can increase risk to cameras, switches and recorders. Surge protection and earthing should be discussed with the appropriate electrical professional and designed into the system where needed.

Ignoring it can be expensive.

Maintenance access should be realistic

Eventually the camera may need cleaning, adjustment or replacement.

If access requires special equipment every time, the client should know that upfront. If the pole is placed behind landscaping, drainage or an awkward boundary area, maintenance becomes harder.

The installation should be designed for ownership, not only for handover.

Cable containment should be protected

The route up the pole and into the camera needs proper protection.

Loose cable, exposed joints and badly sealed entries can become future faults. Outdoor cable containment should consider water, insects, UV exposure, physical damage and whether someone could tamper with the route.

The cable path is part of the security system.

Poles should not be positioned from a drawing only

A drawing can suggest a camera location.

The final position should still be checked onsite. Trees, walls, gate movement, lighting, neighbouring properties, vehicle paths and future landscaping can all affect whether the pole makes sense.

Standing in the actual position before committing can save a poor camera view.
