Load shedding does not only turn systems off.
It also tests how they come back on.
A CCTV system may depend on a fibre ONT, router, network switch, PoE switch, NVR, cameras, app service and sometimes remote access configuration. If those pieces restart in the wrong order, or if one device does not recover cleanly, the system may appear broken even though nothing has physically failed.
This is a South African design reality.

CCTV is a chain
A camera view on your phone may look simple, but there is a chain behind it.
For many systems, that chain includes:
- camera
- PoE switch
- network cable
- NVR or recorder
- router
- fibre ONT
- internet connection
- app account
- phone
If one part of the chain is down, the client may simply say “the cameras are not working”.
That is why fault finding needs to understand the whole path.
Power cuts expose weak design
Some CCTV systems work fine until power becomes unstable.
After a power cut, cameras may not reconnect. The NVR may start before the switch. The router may take longer than expected. A cheap power supply may fail. The fibre ONT may come back but the router may not. The app may show old status until the system fully reconnects.
None of this is unusual.
But it should be planned for.
UPS power should be applied intelligently
Not every device in a home or business needs backup power for the same length of time.
For CCTV, the critical chain usually includes the recorder, PoE switch, router and fibre equipment. If the cameras are powered but the recorder is off, footage may not be saved. If the recorder is on but the network path is down, remote viewing may fail.
A UPS should be specified around the real load and the desired runtime.
For sensitive AV, network and CCTV systems, an online double conversion UPS can be a better solution because it provides cleaner power and avoids cutover behaviour.
The right choice depends on the site, but the principle is simple: protect the critical chain, not random devices.
Restart order matters
Some devices recover better when the network core is stable first.
That means the router, fibre equipment and switches should be powered in a way that gives the system a clean foundation. Cameras and recorders then have a better chance of reconnecting properly.
On larger systems, managed switches, IP addressing and documentation make this easier to support.
If everything is plugged into whatever multiplug was available, recovery becomes unpredictable.
Static addressing and documentation help support
When cameras, NVRs and network devices are documented properly, support is faster.
If a camera is offline after load shedding, a technician should be able to understand where it connects, which switch powers it, what it is called, and whether it should have a predictable address.
Without that record, every outage becomes detective work.

The router is part of the security system
Many clients do not think of the router as part of CCTV.
It is.
If a fibre provider changes the router, IP settings, port forwards, reservations or remote access behaviour may change. Suddenly the cameras may still record locally, but remote viewing or support access may fail.
This is why we prefer to be involved in router and network decisions where a serious CCTV, AV or automation system depends on IP communication.
Test recovery before an incident
The best time to test CCTV recovery is not after something happens.
A maintenance visit should include practical checks:
- restart key equipment if appropriate
- confirm cameras reconnect
- confirm recording resumes
- confirm remote viewing works
- confirm the NVR time is correct
- check UPS status
- check switch status
That kind of test gives more confidence than only looking at live view.
South African systems need South African planning
In a country with load shedding, voltage events and frequent network-provider changes, CCTV should be designed for recovery.
The system should not depend on luck.
