Low-voltage cables are easy to damage during construction.

They are often installed before ceilings, joinery, plastering, painting and final electrical work are complete. That means they sit in a building while many other trades are still working around them.

Damage control should not be an afterthought.

A cable can be damaged without anyone noticing

Not every damaged cable is obviously cut.

It may be stretched, kinked, crushed, nicked, stapled, bent too tightly or pulled out of position. The cable may still look present, but it may no longer perform properly when the system is commissioned.

This is why testing matters at more than one stage.

A cable that passed during first fix can still fail later if the site changed.

Finishes make repairs expensive

Before ceilings close, a damaged cable may be repairable with manageable disruption.

After ceilings, paint, joinery and stonework are complete, the same problem becomes much more expensive. Nobody wants to open a finished room because a cable was damaged weeks earlier and never retested.

The cheapest repair is usually the one found early.

Communication between trades matters

Builders, electricians, ceiling installers, cabinet makers, painters, landscapers and security contractors can all affect low-voltage routes.

If nobody knows which routes are important, damage becomes more likely. Markups, site photos, labels and short coordination meetings can reduce avoidable problems before they happen.

The AV contractor should not work in isolation.

The best time to discuss cable protection is before the site becomes crowded. Once several trades are trying to finish at the same time, everyone is under pressure. A route that was obvious during first fix may be covered, moved or blocked by the time second fix starts.

Clear communication gives each trade a better chance of avoiding the technology infrastructure.

Temporary protection helps

Some cables need temporary protection during construction.

Loops should be kept out of the way. Boxes should be marked. Ceiling positions should be protected from plaster and paint. Rack cables should not be left where they can be walked over or used as general site storage.

Small precautions can prevent expensive frustration later.

Retesting should be expected

A single cable test during first fix is useful, but it does not confirm the cable survived the entire build.

Important cable runs should be retested at sensible stages, especially before finishes make access difficult. TV points, access points, CCTV positions, speaker runs and control cables should not be assumed healthy simply because they were installed earlier.

Retesting is not a sign that something went wrong.

It is a professional check before the project becomes harder to repair.
