A room can work perfectly at handover and then feel unreliable after the furniture is moved.
That sounds strange until you look at what the furniture may be hiding.
Modern rooms often contain more technology than is visible. There may be HDMI cables, speaker cables, infrared receivers, access points, power supplies, subwoofer feeds, control points, ventilation paths, charging points and equipment hidden inside cabinets.
Move the furniture without considering those details, and the room can change technically.
A cable can be crushed without looking damaged
AV cables are not all equally forgiving.
An HDMI cable, optical cable, speaker cable or network lead may still look connected while being bent, crushed or strained behind a cabinet.
The result may be intermittent.
The picture works sometimes. The audio cuts out. The subwoofer hums. The TV loses signal when the cabinet is pushed back. A network device drops offline after the cable has been trapped.
Those faults are frustrating because nothing appears obviously broken.
The change was physical, not electronic.
Remotes and sensors can be blocked
Some rooms still use infrared control, even when the wider home has smart-home control.
If a cabinet, soundbar, decorative item or TV position changes, an infrared receiver or emitter can be blocked.
The user presses the remote and the system behaves inconsistently.
The remote is blamed.
The real issue may be line of sight.
The same applies to motion sensors, door sensors, some wireless devices and equipment that needs a clear physical path.
Furniture changes the sound
Audio is affected by the room.
A couch moved forward, a rug added, curtains changed, a cabinet placed near a speaker, or a subwoofer pushed into a different corner can all change the listening experience.
Sometimes the system is not faulty.
The room has changed.
In cinema rooms, media rooms and entertainment areas, furniture position should be part of the design conversation. The best speaker locations and subwoofer positions depend on where people will actually sit.
This is why AV planning should happen with the interior layout, not after it.
Equipment needs airflow after the room is styled
Interior design often improves the room visually.
But technology still needs airflow.
A decoder, amplifier, game console, HDMI extender, network switch or media player hidden inside joinery may work while doors are open during installation and fail once the cabinet is dressed, closed and used normally.
Heat faults often appear later.
The equipment works when cold, then becomes unstable after an evening of use.
If furniture or cabinetry changes after handover, ventilation should be checked again.
Wi-Fi can also be affected
In South African homes, concrete walls and slabs are usually the main Wi-Fi challenge.
But furniture and finishes still matter.
Large mirrors, metal cabinets, appliances, water features, dense joinery and some concealed equipment positions can affect wireless performance. If an access point is hidden, it must still be accessible and should not be boxed in without thought.
The issue is not that technology can never be hidden.
It can.
It simply has to remain serviceable.
Small room changes should be communicated
DG Technologies does not expect clients to ask permission before moving a couch.
But if a room stops behaving after a move, that detail should be mentioned during support.
It helps to know:
- what furniture moved,
- whether cabinets were opened,
- whether a TV was remounted,
- whether cables were disturbed,
- whether equipment was placed inside joinery,
- and whether any remotes or sensors are now hidden.
The room is part of the system.
When the room changes, the system may need a small adjustment.
That is not a design failure.
It is why good AV work must understand the physical space as well as the equipment.
