Many smart-home problems begin with a router.
Not because the router is exciting.
Because it quietly controls how devices find each other.
Older router setups teach why the network cannot be treated as an afterthought in home automation, CCTV or AV.
The router remembers the home
A serious installation may depend on stable IP addressing.
The Crestron processor, touch panels, CCTV recorder, cameras, audio devices, Apple TVs, access points, gate equipment and remote support tools may all rely on predictable network behaviour.
If an old router is replaced without carrying those assumptions forward, the system can feel broken overnight.
DHCP changes can move devices
If the DHCP range changes, devices may receive different addresses.
If IP reservations are lost, control systems may no longer find what they expect.
If a device was manually addressed years ago and nobody recorded it, replacement work becomes harder.

Wi-Fi names can hide network changes
Sometimes a new router is configured with the old Wi-Fi name.
That may help phones reconnect, but it does not mean the network is the same.
The IP range may be different. Port rules may be missing. Guest networks may be configured differently. Local discovery may behave differently. Remote support may be gone.
The name is not the network.
Remote access depends on deliberate design
Older setups often used simple port forwards or basic remote access methods.
Modern support should be more controlled.
But the principle remains: remote access must be understood, documented and secure.
If nobody knows how remote support was originally configured, a router change can remove an important support path.
The router also affects service boundaries
Router ownership can become political.
The ISP may think of it as internet equipment. The IT provider may think of it as office infrastructure. The homeowner may think of it as the Wi-Fi box. The automation installer sees it as the device that keeps processors, cameras, touch panels, source devices and remote support reachable.
Those views are all understandable, but someone must own the final design.
The lesson is ownership
The router should not be treated as generic IT equipment when the home depends on it for automation, CCTV and AV.
It is part of the installed system.
Old router setups teach that network ownership matters.
If the system relies on IP communication, someone must be responsible for preserving the network design.
