I found a 1984 Ilanga page that made me stop for a second.
In one security advert, the supplier grouped burglar alarms, closed-circuit TVs, intercoms, remote garage door openers and gate openers together. That is almost the same category conversation we still have today, even though the equipment is unrecognisable now.
The old language was closed-circuit TV.
Today we talk about IP cameras, PoE switches, NVRs, video walls, cloud access, analytics, fibre uplinks and mobile viewing.
But the basic question is still the same: can the right person see the right area at the right time?
The camera is only one part of the system
This is where many CCTV quotes go wrong.
They focus on camera count and resolution, then ignore the pieces that make the system trustworthy:
- camera position
- cable route
- power method
- PoE budget
- network segmentation
- recording duration
- night performance
- user permissions
- monitor layout
- service access
The archive proves that camera systems were already being sold as part of a broader security ecosystem in Durban in the 1980s. That is the part worth paying attention to. CCTV was not isolated. It sat beside alarms, intercoms and access control.
Professional CCTV still works that way.
From closed circuit to integrated networks
The 2019 eThekwini annual report uses a different kind of language. It refers to the lack of an integrated CCTV system and the commissioning of an intelligent private video cloud system with redundancy.
That is a very modern concern.
Once a site becomes large enough, CCTV stops being a camera job and becomes an infrastructure job.
You need network paths, switching, bandwidth, storage, power protection, redundancy and a way for users to actually view the cameras without fighting the system.

Why large sites need different thinking
For a small house, someone may tolerate a basic recorder and a few cameras.
For a warehouse, factory, estate, school or commercial site, that approach breaks quickly. Forklift routes, loading bays, entrances, blind spots, staff movement, night lighting, remote viewing and management access all matter.
If the owner cannot see the right view when something happens, the camera count was not the achievement.

The Durban lesson
The useful thread from the archive is not that CCTV existed in 1984. Many people know that.
The useful thread is that Durban security technology was already being sold as a connected group of functions: seeing, opening, communicating and detecting.
Modern commercial CCTV is the same problem at a higher technical level.
The difference is that today the weak point is often not the camera. It is the network, the power, the cable route, the handover or the way the operator is expected to use it.
