C&J Services Commercial CCTV Network

C&J Services is the kind of project that explains why DG Technologies does not treat commercial CCTV as a camera count.

The visible part of the system is the cameras. The real project sat behind them: network design, recorder capacity, fibre between areas, PoE switching, cabinet locations, cable routes, office viewing and long-term support.

For public safety and client confidentiality, this case study does not publish exact camera layouts, blind spots, private network settings, access details or operational security information. What we can publish is the design thinking and the type of infrastructure required to make a commercial CCTV system useful to the people who depend on it every day.

The Brief: One Business, Multiple Areas

The C&J work involved more than one physical area of the business.

The requirement was not simply to add isolated cameras where cable could be pulled. The site needed a coherent surveillance system that could bring separate areas back into one practical viewing and recording environment.

That meant planning around:

• a larger Dahua IP CCTV system,
• an NVR strategy with capacity for growth,
• new camera and cable points,
• an upstairs/remote section of the premises,
• fibre-linked cabinet infrastructure,
• PoE switching,
• network addressing,
• office viewing,
• and service access for future maintenance.

The result needed to feel simple to the client: one system, one practical way to view the business, and a recorder structure that made sense.

The Design: CCTV As Network Infrastructure

Modern commercial CCTV is IP-based.

Every camera is a network device. The recorder is a network device. The viewing station depends on the network. Remote support depends on the network. Playback depends on the NVR, storage, switching and cabling path.

On C&J, that meant the design had to include the network from the start.

The project included fibre and SFP-linked infrastructure, PoE switching, cabinet work, CAT6 cabling, conduit and containment. The fibre link was particularly important because the system had to connect different sections of the site without forcing every cable into one impractical copper route.

At one stage of the job, we were working through the practical problem of getting fibre completed for the second building. That is the part of commercial CCTV that never appears in a neat camera bundle: ladders, height access, shelter structures, cabinet positions, cable routes and coordination with the people on site.

Recorder Capacity And Expansion

The recorder had to be thought through properly.

C&J was not a small four-camera installation. The project scope included new cameras, additional cable points, cabinet expansion, extra storage and increased recording capacity. The intent was to give the site room to grow instead of creating a system that would need to be redesigned at the next expansion.

That is a key commercial CCTV lesson.

A cheap NVR can look adequate when the first cameras are installed. It becomes a problem when more areas need coverage, when storage expectations increase, or when the owner wants more useful camera layouts on office monitors.

DG Technologies looks at CCTV installation as a system: cameras, recorder, storage, PoE, network, viewing, power, handover and support.

The Viewing Station: Designed Around The Owner

One of the most important parts of the C&J installation was the viewing station.

For Shaun, the system needed to be visible from his desk. The final setup used two large 55-inch displays arranged one above the other so many important views could be seen at a glance.

That matters.

A phone app is useful, but it is not the same as a permanent operational viewing point. A business owner may want to glance up from a desk and understand activity across the site immediately. That requirement changes the design.

It affects monitor size, mounting, HDMI or extender routes, network viewing, KVM or keyboard control, power positioning and the camera layout shown on screen.

The viewing station is not decoration.

It is part of the system.

KVM And Day-To-Day Usability

Commercial CCTV has to be usable by the people on site.

That includes the person who views cameras, the person who searches footage, the person who needs to change a layout, and the person who calls support when something does not look right.

Keyboard, mouse or KVM-style control can matter when the recorder is not sitting conveniently on the desk. The person using the system should not have to walk to a cabinet, balance a mouse on a rack shelf, or ask a technician every time a view needs to be changed.

This is where AV thinking and CCTV thinking overlap. A camera system captures footage, but the display and control method decide how usable that footage feels in real life.

Site Coordination And Lenny’s Role

On commercial projects, there is usually someone on site who becomes essential to the flow of information.

At C&J, Lenny was that practical site contact. He helped with access, drawings, on-site areas and coordination while the work was being planned and installed. That kind of person matters because camera drawings and quotes do not always tell the full story.

The installer still needs to know:

• which area is ready,
• where work can happen safely,
• what route is practical,
• who can approve a view,
• when staff or business activity may be affected,
• and what needs to stay operational.

Good commercial work depends on those relationships as much as it depends on equipment.

Retrofit Realities

The C&J job also shows the reality of retrofit CCTV.

Existing commercial buildings are rarely blank canvases. There are beams, shelves, ceilings, offices, working staff, previous cabling decisions and access restrictions. Some camera positions only become practical once the cable route, conduit path and cabinet location have been checked.

That is why DG Technologies does not like guessing camera positions from a desk.

The route matters.

The cabinet matters.

The draw access matters.

The ability to service the system later matters.

Long-Term Support

The strongest part of this case study may be what happened after the installation.

C&J did not become a forgotten job after handover. We returned for additions, route checks, extra camera work, fibre follow-up, cable tray work and support items as the site continued to evolve.

That is normal for a commercial CCTV relationship.

The important point is that those visits were not signs of a failed design. In a working business, there will always be small maintenance needs, building changes, viewing requests, network coordination and practical adjustments.

The notable part is that the foundation stayed stable. From the original 2021/2022 installation period onward, the issues that came up were mainly small maintenance and operational matters rather than repeated camera failure.

That is what a commercial client should want.

Not a system that never needs attention.

A system that has a strong enough foundation that attention stays manageable.

What This Project Demonstrates

C&J Services demonstrates DG Technologies’ commercial CCTV capability in a way that is different from our residential Crestron, cinema and smart-home work.

It shows:

A serious CCTV installation is not just cameras on walls.

It is a system that has to record, display, support and survive the way the business actually operates.
