When guests complain that hotel Wi-Fi keeps dropping, the problem is rarely one single access point. It is usually the result of consumer-grade design being stretched across a commercial building.
Hotels are difficult wireless environments. Guests arrive with phones, tablets, laptops, streaming devices and sometimes work equipment. Staff devices, point-of-sale systems, smart TVs, cameras, access control and building systems may all be sharing the same infrastructure. If the network was built like a large home network, it will eventually fall over.
The first issue is often equipment class. Consumer routers and mesh kits are designed for small spaces with light traffic. They are not built for dozens of rooms, roaming clients, guest isolation, captive portals and high-density usage. Enterprise access points are managed centrally, support better roaming and allow the network to be designed by coverage, capacity and policy.
The second issue is access point placement. More APs does not automatically mean better Wi-Fi. If they are placed badly, transmit too loudly or overlap incorrectly, devices cling to the wrong AP and calls or streams drop as guests move. A proper design considers wall materials, corridors, room layouts, outdoor spaces and back-of-house areas.
Backhaul is another common failure. If APs are wirelessly meshed through thick walls or long corridors, performance drops quickly. Hotels should use wired backhaul wherever possible, with proper switching, PoE, VLANs and uplinks sized for real traffic. Wireless mesh can help in limited areas, but it should not be the backbone of a serious hotel network.
Segmentation is essential. Guest Wi-Fi, staff devices, AV systems, CCTV, PMS and building-control equipment should not all live on one flat network. VLANs protect systems from each other and make troubleshooting easier. They also prevent guest devices from seeing private equipment.
For hotel owners, the fix usually starts with an audit:
- map existing AP locations
- test signal and roaming
- inspect switching and cabling
- separate network roles with VLANs
- check internet failover and firewall rules
- document the system for support
